At the Michelin Guide awards ceremony for restaurants in Great Britain and Ireland on 10 February, the number of Michelin-starred restaurants in Manchester finally doubled. Admittedly, it only went from one to two, but that's still an encouraging sign for a culinary scene that has long felt overlooked by the Guide.

A Michelin star is considered the pinnacle of culinary accolades, and the excitement builds to a fever pitch before the annual announcement. Chefs eagerly await the verdict that could validate years of dedication and skill, diners hope their beloved local spot will gain the recognition they feel it deserves, seasoned Michelin-starred restaurateurs anxiously prepare, hoping to hold onto their stars or hope to gain another, and local authorities cross their fingers for the influx of gourmet tourism. In essence, the Michelin Guide awards are a Big Deal™ in the culinary world.
Despite a flourishing culinary scene and a sizeable market, Manchester only had one Michelin-starred restaurant, Mana, for a long time, viewed by many as an unjustified oversight. Last year's awards ceremony was even held in Manchester, considered by many as a sure signifier that the city's culinary scene was about to get some shiny recognition, and yet the city was left empty-handed again.
This finally changed in 2025, when a second Manchester venture finally joined the hallowed ranks of Michelin-starred restaurant. Skof by acclaimed chef Tom Barnes now proudly wields one Michelin star. Offering seasonal tasting menus built around locally sourced ingredients with a relaxed, unpretentious approach to fine dining, the award reflects the restaurant's swiftly growing reputation and commitment to excellence. Congratulations to the Skof team!
