Manchester is going green in a big way. The council has just announced CyanLines, a decade-long project that will create more than 100 miles of new walking and cycling routes across Manchester and Salford.

Launching later this year, the first phase will connect Castlefield Viaduct, Symphony Park, Kampus and Ancoats Green with hidden towpaths, riversides and pocket parks. Think of it as a city-wide network of leafy shortcuts, making it easier (and far nicer) to get from A to B without dodging traffic.

“Manchester is on a mission to make our city greener. CyanLines is an exciting new initiative over the next decade to connect and create over 100 miles of connected parks, green spaces and waterfronts,” says Councillor Bev Craig, Leader, Manchester City Council.

The first four routes give a taste of what's to come. One will wind from Victoria Station to Queen's Park along the Irk Valley, another loops Mayfield, New Islington and Ancoats, a third links St Peter's Square to Whitworth Park, and the final one ties the River Irwell to the 'park in the sky' at Castlefield Viaduct.

It's not just about adding greenery – CyanLines aims to connect neighbourhoods, highlight Manchester's mix of heritage and regeneration, and bring more people closer to nature. The project has heavyweight backing from Manchester City Council, the National Trust and GMCA, plus developers like Urban Splash and Bruntwood. Locals will also be able to get involved, with volunteering, funding and community ideas all part of the plan when the CyanLines website launches on 10 September.

Basically, it's about to get a lot easier (and a lot more scenic) to explore Manchester on foot or by bike.
