Tower Of Light

The Tower of Light is a 40-meter structure in Manchester City Centre, supporting flues for a low-carbon energy centre. The tower not only symbolises the council's commitment to clean energy, but also doubles as a small power station. A design competition was held to create a landmark at a key city gateway to avoid a typical, unsightly flue tower. Tonkin Liu, a leading London architecture practice, won with their Shell Lace Structure, inspired by natural geometries for strength. It's the largest of its kind and worth visiting for its striking design.

People's History Museum

History of people and democracy

Manchester's People's History Museum is housed in a historic Grade II-listed former pumping station and is the UK's largest collection focusing on the history of working people and democracy. It's filled with political posters, trade union artefacts, and personal items from key figures. Originally curated in the 1970s and relocated in 1994, the museum features the Labour History Archive & Study Centre with extensive political papers and archives. It's family-friendly, with interactive exhibits, tours, and an ethical café.
