The Manchester Ship Canal Opened in 1894 and linked Manchester to the Irish Sea, making its docks the third-largest in the UK. Industrial use lasted until 1984, but in 2017, a gnome named Gnorman claimed an abandoned concrete island in the canal. Soon joined by Gnorma and their family, the gnome colony grew. Gnome Island is now a quirky attraction best viewed from Trafford, seen from the canalside and passing water taxis.
