People's History Museum
Be inspired by historical figures at the People's History Museum. This museum is the country's largest collection of materials related to working people and democracy, telling the story of how democracy has developed over time in the UK. The museum is located in the heart of Manchester in a Grade II-listed structure that was once a hydraulic pumping station. It began as a collection in the 1970s and has been in its present location since 1994.
At the museum, you can explore an eclectic collection of historical and contemporary artefacts. Just some of the items you can see include political posters, trade union materials, prints and satirical cartoons, ceramics, and personal items belonging to key politicians and historical figures. The People's History Museum is also home to the Labour History Archive & Study Centre, which houses key political papers and complete archives of the Labour Party and the Communist Party of Great Britain, plus 95,000 photographs that provide comprehensive documentation of the development of democracy in Britain.
As well as holding an inspiring collection, this museum hosts events and activities, including tours and activities for children and families. The museum is family-friendly throughout and includes lots of interactive elements to get kids involved. There's an on-site café and bar too, serving ethical and sustainable food and drinks throughout the day. Visitors can also check out the gift shop, packed with souvenirs inspired by the collection.
