Higher Ground
Located in the city centre, Higher Ground is a celebrated bistro and wine bar. It's a modern space that serves thoughtfully-created seasonal dishes and low-intervention wines. This buzzy place started as a pop-up in 2020 that was forced to close soon after opening. Since 2023, it has had a permanent home in New York Street.
The sleek space has industrial touches and shelves stacked with wine bottles. Seating is available in the contemporary dining room or at the kitchen bar where you can watch the chefs at work. As well as stylish surroundings, Higher Ground boasts a buzzing atmosphere and friendly and knowledgable staff.
Carefully-sourced ingredients are used to create the dishes here. There's a heavy focus on seasonal vegetables, most of which are locally sourced from the restaurant's partner farm, as well as whole-animal butchery. À la carte and seasonal set sharing menus are available, but exactly which dishes are on offer changes every day to keep things fresh and exciting. Diners can expect modern British recipes prepared with fine produce.
Wine is also a big deal at Higher Ground, with bottles sourced from makers all over Europe. The focus is on small-scale low-intervention producers, and the curated list encourages curiosity. Most options are by the bottle but there are a few vintages served by the glass. Aside from wine, you can choose local beers and spirits from around the world. Everything is carefully sourced to deliver an experience full of flavour and excitement.
