The guide to Visby's best restaurants

Visby doesn't just draw in the crowds with its beautiful sights – the historic town is also full of really good restaurants. Classic restaurants sit side by side newly opened hotspots, sought-after outdoor dining and other favourites that encourage foodies to make a pilgrimage to the island all year round. Whether you are a tourist or live in Visby, there are numerous restaurants well worth a visit, summer or winter. To make it a little easier to find the right one, we've listed Visby's best restaurants in this guide.

The best restaurants in Visby

Surfers

Flavours from Sichuan

Since Surfers opened its doors in Visby, the restaurant has been a must-visit for foodies. Chinese appetisers from Sichuan are paired with exciting cocktails in an atmospheric environment. Fill the table with sought-after flavours and soak up the ambiance, but remember to book a table well in advance if you want to ensure a spot.

Bakfickan

Fish and shellfish favourite

Right next to the ruin on Stora Torget, this authentic little restaurant serves fish and seafood. Guests flock to Bakfickan all year round to feast on fried herring, fish soup, and other seasonal favourites, or to browse the delicacies sold over the counter. Securing a table isn't always easy, but it is worth the wait.

Crêperie & Logi

Savoury galettes and sweet crêpes

Many would argue that a visit to Visby isn't complete without a stop at Crêperie & Logi. Located in the iconic Strykjärnshuset building in the city centre, this charming eatery serves French 'pancakes' - both savoury galettes and sweet crêpes - to locals and tourists. Visitors also come for the cosy atmosphere, which in the summer expands to include a picturesque outdoor seating area with beautiful views.

Vår Fru

From frame workshop to restaurant

Actress Lia Boysen and the founder of Fotografiska, Per Broman, have transformed an old frame workshop into Vår Fru, a cosy restaurant and bar with a charming interior and a pleasant atmosphere. They serve food, cocktails, and natural wines with the motto "taste, creativity, and sustainability". During the summer months, they open up their lush orangery courtyard.

Bageriet

Locally sourced from Gotland

Whether you're hungry or just want to enjoy a beer or a glass of natural wine on the outdoor seating area, you've come to the right place at Bageriet. This cosy restaurant serves seasonal dishes made with locally sourced ingredients from Gotland, and they know their drinks too. In the summer, the outdoor seating area is a popular spot with views overlooking the ruins.

Villa Alma

A taste of Asia

Located on attractive Strandvägen, overlooking Visby harbour and Almedalen, Villa Alma serves small dishes with flavours from all corners of Asia. Order a selection to share with your companions, or let the chef select their favourites from the menu for you. The restaurant's open from May to September, and early risers can also come here for a homemade breakfast buffet.

Lindgården

Authentic style

In the dining room at Lindgården's Värdshus you can travel back to the 1900s while enjoying classic dishes made with seasonal Gotlandic ingredients. If you fancy a gin & tonic, be sure to visit their gin room upstairs, where they focus on various types of gin from Gotland, Sweden, and other countries. Also, don't miss out the outdoor terrace in the park during the summer.

Bror San

Korean influencers

Craving Korean flavours? Then head towards Adelsgatan and Bror San. They shake and stir cocktails and serve food with influences from the Korean cuisine. The dinner menu consists of main dishes and appetisers with classic and modern elements, and you can also buy their homemade sauces to take home with you.

Supper

Summer in South America

During the summer months, Supper opens its doors in a back garden in the middle of Visby and offers a sunny spot to hangout. Just like its sister restaurants in Stockholm and Åre, they take inspiration from South America and serve cocktails and small dishes to share.

Bolaget

French on the square

In the old premises of Systembolaget on Stora torget, you'll find Bolaget, which has been serving French flavours since 2006. The emphasis used to be on the wine bar, but Bolaget is now a full-scale restaurant with a renovated 18th-century environment. The outdoor seating on the square attracts crowds of hungry and wine-thirsty visitors during the summers.

Kasai

Fusion and a party atmosphere

Kasai is known for its Japanese fusion dishes and its party atmosphere. Choose from Japanese small dishes, grilled dishes, sushi, and more from the menu, or simply hang out at the bar and enjoy a cocktail or two. They also have a sunny terrace where you can socialise with a beautiful view.

Cavabaren

Cava and tapas

Cavabaren, which also has a branch in Stockholm, not only serves wine but also various forms of tapas. Pick your favourites and sip on a glass while admiring the view of the sea and rooftops.
