Most people looking for restaurants in Österlen find their way to Franskans Crêperie, in the small village of Rörum. It's a very popular spot, and if you want to guarantee being able to enjoy good galettes and crêpes, it's a good idea to book a table in advance, as queues can get quite long. The menu offers sweet, savoury, sour, and smooth flavours, and all galettes are gluten-free. There are also several vegetarian and vegan options on the menu, as well as delicious desserts. Tryffelsvinet restaurant can be found in two locations in Österlen, in Kivik and Ystad. They prepare dishes that they themselves love, and menus are designed with inspiration drawn from various Italian regions. Strong flavours are the focus, and the atmosphere is both relaxed and inviting. The bistros serve both lunch and dinner, and in the summer, you can sit down on the outdoor terrace and people-watch. Tryffelsvinet welcomes adults and children, as well as their four-legged friends.

In the small village of Gislöv, just outside Simrishamn, lies Karnelund Krog & Rum. The restaurant serves flavourful dishes inspired by the Mediterranean, but many of the ingredients are sourced from Skåne. The menu is designed so that guests can choose whether to have two or three courses, and there are also vegetarian options available. For those looking to indulge a little more, you can check into one of the seven hotel rooms and stay overnight, waking up to a delicious breakfast buffet. In the Provence-inspired courtyard, a large plane tree provides cooling shade on sunny days.

Tumült restaurant in Ystad is run by well-known restaurateur and chef Daniel Müllern. Guests are served well-prepared and delicious food, but also a charming atmosphere characterised by just the right amount of happy chaos. Dancing on the tables? Yes, it happens. The à la carte menu is built around small and medium dishes, but there are also larger meat dishes as well as the “Chef's choice” for those struggling to decide. The lunch menu is reasonably sized and affordable and always includes salad, ÖG's baguette and table water.

Can you even say you've been to Österlen if you haven't eaten a delicious pizza baked in a wood-fired oven at Friden? Doubtful. In the heart of Österlen, housed in an old apple orchard, you can enjoy pizzas made with sourdough and toppings that are as organic and locally sourced as possible. This is far from a fast food joint - all pizzas are hand-formed and made with true craftsmanship. Friden Gårdskrog is a mobile-free space, so take the opportunity to log out and enjoy the atmosphere of this place about three kilometres from Kivik.

Skillinge Hamnkrog is something of a hallmark for Skillinge and the restaurant down by the harbour is well-known throughout Österlen. They serve mainly delicious fish and seafood dishes, but they also add a few other traditional dining experiences throughout the year. The restaurant's location right on the quayside makes for a delightful atmosphere and offers beautiful surroundings both inside the restaurant and on the outdoor seating area. A bonus is that dogs are allowed on the outdoor terrace, and in some cases, exceptions can also be made indoors.

If you're looking for a top-class café experience, then it's always a safe bet to head to Olof Viktors in Glemminge. The café and bakery have won multiple awards, and you'll find beautiful pastries and bread baked according to traditional artisanal techniques, with a large dose of love. Indulge in a mini princess cake, the famed carrot cake (highly recommended), a fluffy and buttery croissant, or a delicious sandwich. In the summer, you can enjoy the lush garden, but the atmosphere indoors is also cosy. In Olof Viktors' shop, you can purchase pastries, various types of bread, juice, and sourdough starters to take home.

Near Stenshuvud, this cosy and old-fashioned café mainly attracts guests with its large homemade cake buffet, which you can eat as much of as you can manage. The tables are adorned with lace doilies, as they have been since opening in 1956. They have kept the best of grandma's coffee mornings and added a few modern touches, such as sourdough pizzas, salads, and prawn sandwiches.

Beautifully located, surrounded by the Verkeån nature reserve, is the old timber-framed building that today houses Alunbruket, Skåne's oldest coffee cottage. Back in 1930, Hilda Nilsson began serving coffee with homemade cakes here in her home, and to this day, her recipes for the cakes on the traditional cake stand live on. You're welcome to sit down and enjoy homemade treats, or have lunch in the form of a prawn sandwich or an open sandwich. There are always gluten-free and vegan options on the menu. For anyone wanting to stay overnight, there's also a bed and breakfast here – perfect if you want to stay surrounded by nature, close to hiking trails.

Byvägen 35 in Sankt Olof is a very popular craft bakery and café that attracts guests with its delicious sourdough bread, buns, and tasty pastries. You can also come here for lunch; the menu is hearty with several vegetarian options.

If you appreciate historical value, head to Café Sågmöllan in Kivik. It's one of Österlen's oldest cafés and is housed in an old sawmill. Sit and enjoy a cup of coffee surrounded by the same furnishings that were custom ordered for the opening in 1939. At Café Sågmöllan, all pastries, sandwiches and waffles are naturally gluten-free, and much of their selection is also dairy-free. Vegans also have plenty of delicious options to choose from. The aim is for everyone to be able to come here for a pleasant coffee break.

Set among fields and meadows, Olaols Gelato café is housed in a four-winged 19th-century farmhouse just outside Gladsax. You'll find everything you could wish for here in terms of fika and lunch options, with a selection to suit all tastes. Of course, they're most famous for their gelato, which is made from fresh milk collected every morning from the cows on the neighbouring farm, but there are also waffles with hearty spreads, smoothie bowls, muffulettas, as well as freshly baked cinnamon buns and cookies to nibble on. Dogs are welcome, and there are plenty of play areas for children.

In Skåne-Tranås, you can pop into Madame Blå, where you can munch on galettes, waffles, and cakes. Choose from several different varieties of the French pancake, made with Swedish buckwheat flour and served with various fillings and salad. All galettes are gluten- and lactose-free. Perfect for lunch! If you're feeling more in the mood for something sweet, you can order one of their sweet waffles, or enjoy coffee and cake.

Every Easter, the popular Konstrundan Art Tour takes place in Österlen, engaging hundreds of exhibitors and thousands of art-interested visitors. Study the map carefully before setting off to plan the best route with art and design to see, ranging from paintings and sculptures to ceramics and textiles. Many artists invite you into their homes or studios, while others rent spaces in venues such as Ystad Saltsjöbad. Keep an eye out for the yellow and red symbol along the roads and prepare for heavy traffic as well as crowds at most cafés and restaurants in Österlen.

One of Sweden's most beloved authors, Fritiof Nilsson Piraten, is perhaps best known for “Bombi Bitt and I” and his famous gravestone in Ravlunda is well visited. It bears the well-known text “Here below are the ashes of a man who had the habit of putting everything off until tomorrow. But in his final days he improved, and did actually die on 31 January 1972”. Every year on Piraten Day, 14 July, the Piraten Prize is awarded in Kivik.

Every year, Sweden's largest market is held in Kivik. For three days at the end of July, visitors can come here to wander around a multitude of market stalls, ride on the fairground rides, eat food, and attend concerts. Kivik market attracts both young and old, and admission is always free.

Do you love film? Then you should visit Ystad Studios Visitor Center, an experience centre for film, located right next to the film production studio Ystad Studios. In addition to the Wallander films, the Oscar-nominated 'The Best of Mothers', 'Maria Larsson's Eternal Moment', 'Svinalängorna' and the interior scenes from the TV series 'The Bridge' have been filmed here. You can wander around authentic studio builds and cinematic environments, look at and try out props, and even create films using professional equipment. Definitely a fun cultural activity for the whole family!

Since 1971, steam trains have been chugging along one of Sweden's most beautiful railways, which runs between Brösarp and S:t Olof. The steam train is a fun way for both adults and children to experience Österlen, with the journey taking you around Brösarp's hills, along Hanö Bay, past wide fields and deep beech forests. The museum association Skånska Järnvägar preserves and develops this heritage railway in Österlen.

Ales stenar, or Ale's Stones, is an ancient monument consisting of 59 stones that weigh at least five tonnes each. The stone ship is Sweden's largest preserved and is approximately 67 metres long and 19 metres wide. The monument is near the village of Kåseberga and is often dated back to the Vendel period, although burials may have taken place here as early as the Iron Age. The walk up to the stones, and it's not uncommon to be accompanied by a few cows along the way. Don't forget to soak in the magical view of the sea.

Near Kivik lies Stenshuvud National Park. Swim along the long sandy beach, hike to the summit, or take a guided tour of the national park which has an exotic southern character. We recommend hiking to the top through the beech forest, past the ancient oaks, to get the most out of your visit. From the top, you can gaze out over the sea and land beside Hanö Bay. According to legend, the giant Sten, also known as Stenhogubben, lives with his family and livestock inside the mountain, which is accessed through a cave called Giddastuan.

Curious about visiting the southernmost point of Sweden? Then you should head to Smygehuk on the southern coast of Skåne. The location attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, and there's a compass-like distance indicator made of stone on the ground, as well as a sign pointing out directions and distances to some European capitals and to Treriksröset. You can also enjoy ice cream, visit the smokehouse, or have a coffee here.

Brösarps hills are a beautiful place to stop. The steam train chugs through the rolling landscape and there are wide-reaching views over the Verkeå river valley. Brösarps hills are often referred to as the gateway to Österlen and they are part of southern Sweden's largest nature reserve. The hills, which are deposits from the last Ice Age, served as a backdrop when the film version of Brothers Lionheart was shot here.

The best-preserved medieval castle in Scandinavia, Glimmingehus, is in Österlen. The castle was built in 1499 by a Danish knight and was used as both a defensive stronghold and a residence. It is constructed of limestone with thick walls, arrow slits, and removable staircases. Since Glimmingehus has remained unchanged for over 500 years, visitors gain a unique insight into the life and architecture of medieval nobility, and naturally, it's said to be haunted. Join a guided tour, visit a historical exhibition, or take part in a medieval activity. In the courtyard, you can try standing in the stocks… Glimmingehus is an exciting destination for the whole family!

On the east coast of Skåne, you can play golf year-round. At Österlens Golf Club, there are two courses to play; the classic Lilla Vik, which is a lush park course where you play among sea breezes and apple trees, and Djupadal, which is inspired by Scotland, where you play high up with an unbeatable view of the landscape, the sea, and Stenshuvud. Österlens Golf Club also has two restaurants and a shop.

If you want to play golf at one of Sweden's oldest and most prestigious golf clubs, you should visit Ystad Golf Club. Play the 18-hole course that offers both park and seaside vibes. This means that several of the holes are characterised by water, while all holes are defined by the wind. A fun challenge for all golfers. If you want to have lunch or dinner, you can do so in the restaurant Cicerone.

If you want to play golf in Österlen, and perhaps also engage in some other activities, it's worth visiting Tomelilla Golf. This is a popular golf facility that offers play on an 18-hole course and a short hole course, as well as pay and play, padel, and footgolf. If you'd like to stay overnight, there is a hotel section with eight suites, as well as a campsite and restaurant that caters to various types of occasions.

In Åhus, the small village located right on the edge of what is considered Österlen, lies this modern golf destination with 36 holes in a beautiful setting. In both 2023 and 2024, Kristianstad Golf Club & Destination was awarded Sweden's best golf course at the prestigious World Golf Awards. In addition to two courses, East Course and West Course, there's a popular restaurant, Pine here, as well as several accommodation options in modern houses in the heart of the resort. As an added bonus, it is just a short bike ride from here to Åhus's wide beaches.

Just north of Kivik, in beautiful Haväng in Verkaådalen, you'll find Skepparps Vineyard, a lovely vineyard to visit in Österlen. They cultivate both grapes and apples, which are then transformed into wine and cider. The vineyard regularly hosts tours and wine tastings where you can sample the estate's wines. Various types of events are also organised, focusing on both wine and food. The wines from Skepparps Vineyard are characterised by the vineyard's unique location and Österlen's microclimate.

Atop a hill offering views over the sea, the rolling Skåne landscape and Hammars backar, you'll find Köpingsberg Vineyard. They grow everything from Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc to more obscure grape varieties, such as Solaris and Seyval Blanc, across three hectares. During the summer months, they host joyful, casual, and luxurious tours and wine tastings at the vineyard. As enjoyable as it is educational.

In the midst of the rolling landscape of Österlen lies Ekesåkra Vineyard, which produces Österlen wine. The vineyard currently has about 2,500 vines of Solaris, Rondo, Souvenir Gris, and Cabernet Cortis. All the grapes here are used to make the estate's own wines, and regular enjoyable wine tastings are organised.

Between Ales stenar and Stenshuvud, just a couple of kilometres south of Skillinge fishing village, lies the vineyard Domän Sånana. Percy Månsson planted the first vines in 1994, and the first wine was bottled in 1999. Thanks to the proximity to the sea, which is only 300 metres away, the grapes are cultivated in a mild microclimate. During a visit to Sånana, you can see how the wine is produced and enjoy a pleasant wine tasting. Since 2010, Domän Sånana has been an approved supplier to Systembolaget.

Close to the long sandy beach of Hanö Bay, near both Åhus and Yngsjö, lies Åhus Vineyard. This vineyard is located near but not actually in Österlen, but is still worth mentioning in this guide to Österlen if you find yourself in the vicinity. You can visit here if you wish to take a guided tour of the vineyard and take a deep dive into Swedish viticulture. Sample the estate's wines and enjoy the romantic atmosphere that prevails here.

In the small village of Borrby,  the interior design store Apotekarns is a popular destination for anyone in search of exciting furnishings. There's a passion for colourful, quirky, patterned and high-quality items, and the owners are constantly hunting the world to find new products to offer. The store is therefore in a state of constant change, making each visit exciting. Shop for everything from ceramics and beautiful mosaic tables to furniture, textiles, kitchen utensils, pots and much more.

Kiviks Musteri has been in Kivik since 1888, and you can stroll through the vast apple orchards and learn all about apples, juice, and cider. In the shop, you can explore a wide range of juices, ciders, and other beverages that come directly from the cider mill. You can also book a cider tasting where you can enjoy different Skåne ciders along with small dishes made from local ingredients. Only feeling hungry? At Kiviks Musteri, you can enjoy hot and cold meals, snacks, or just grab a refreshing drink.

In Djupadal, the Mandelmann family runs an organic visitor garden, and they have been doing so since 1996. Since the beginning, they have invited television viewers into the show "Mandelmann's Farm" which aired on TV4, and they became well-known to the entire Swedish public. The Mandelmann couple grows most of what is sold in the farm shop and served in the café. Mandelmanns Gardens is open to visitors a few days a week from June to October. Couples can also book their wedding in the farm's beautiful gardens.

In an old village school from 1893 in Skåne-Tranås you'll find the popular destination Österlenchoklad. Swedish chocolate has been made here since 2013 – from cocoa bean to finished chocolate product. The shop is open year-round, and you can buy chocolate at factory prices, but you can also sit down for a snack in the café. From the factory shop, visitors can see the chocolate production through windows, from when the cocoa beans are roasted to the decoration of pralines; what you see depends on which day you visit Österlenchoklad.

Karl Fredrik at Eklaholm is perhaps best known from the TV programme "Karl Fredrik at Österlen". Eklaholm is the farm where he operates and lives together with Petter, and together they have created a world of flowers, plants, and decor along the coast of Österlen. The couple is driven by the desire to create a freer way of looking at gardening and interior design, by offering a world filled with beauty for everyone to be a part of. In addition to a variety of flowers and plants, one can explore decor for the garden and kitchen, as well as delicacies, hats, and Karl Fredrik's books.

It's hardly surprising that Sandhammaren has been voted Sweden's best beach several times, as it resembles the beaches of the Mediterranean. The fine-grained sand and wide beach make it one of Skåne's most popular beaches, where people enjoy playing, relaxing, and appreciating the adjacent pine forest. You can get a a snack or a meal at the kiosk. However, it is important to be aware that the currents can be both strong and dangerous, so a tip is to swim out and then swim back to shore.

Ystad's sandskog is a sandy beach around four kilometres long that stretches from Ystad's eastern outskirts to the Nybro River. Along the western edge of Österlen, the beach boasts fine, white sand that evokes thoughts of the Mediterranean. The beach is particularly suitable for families with children, as it has a gentle slope into the water. Along the shoreline is a beautiful pine forest that was planted back in the 19th century, providing a lush environment that offers refreshing shade when the sun is too strong.

If you appreciate beaches where there's plenty of peace and quiet, then Vitemölla beach is a perfect option when planning a day by the sea. The beach is located just north of Kivik and is a vast sandy beach where the water's clear and there are sand dunes. The water is relatively shallow here. Enjoy the prevailing calm, take refreshing dips in the blue and stroll along the shoreline if restlessness sets in.

The beach at Mälarhusen consists of fine-grained sand and stretches along the coast, offering both relaxation and lovely walks. The water is clear and shallow, making it a great beach for families with children to visit. Gentle sand dunes rise with patches of sparse pine forest, creating a harmonious setting. It's usually quite calm, which often makes for a peaceful day by the sea in Österlen.

In Kivik, Kivik sea bath is a charming little sandy beach located near the cosy harbour and the classic bath hotel. The beach has fine-grained sand that's perfect for both swimming and relaxing walks. The water is both clear and shallow, so children can play and splash in the waves. There's also a jetty with a swimming ladder for those who want to swim a bit further out. Thanks to the location of the sea swimming spot, there are plenty of facilities nearby.

Nearby, there are two churches: Fågeltofta Church and St. Olaf's medieval cross church, which is one of Skåne's oldest churches.
