Visby's cobbled streets, rose bushes and historic surroundings are the perfect backdrop for a really good fika. Tucked away among the city's winding streets, you'll find everything from classic patisseries and charming inner courtyards to trendy coffee bars and small, personal places. Settle down with a smooth cup of coffee, sip an Italian espresso or go all-in with homemade pastries and filling lunches. Just outside the city centre there are also cafés with sea views and leafy gardens, perfect for a little outing. In this guide, we've collected our favorite cafés for when the craving for coffee strikes.

Cafés in Visby

Our best tips for coffee breaks in Visby

Konditori Norrgatt

Classic 1950s-style patisserie

Many regard Konditori Norrgatt as one of Visby's cosiest cafés, with perfectly preserved 1950s decor and a nostalgic patisserie vibe. Tuck into classics such as cinnamon buns, chocolate balls, mazarins and biscuits. A ten-minute stroll from the city centre is rewarded with a relaxing moment in surroundings that feel as though they're from another era.

Café Gula Huset

A home-from-home vibe

Another café high on the cosy list is Café Gula Huset, which is housed in just that: a small yellow house on Tranhusgatan, a stone's throw from the Botanical Gardens. The café is tiny and, naturally, serves classic Gotland saffron pancakes, as well as other tasty things such as pies, cakes and buns. Having a coffee here almost feels like having coffee at someone's home, a feeling that's enhanced by the lovely little garden.

Babka

Rustic pastries

Babka has taken its name from the Polish pastry of the same name, a pastry that the Polish owner grew up with. Babkas are, of course, on display behind the counter, alongside other beautiful, rustic and colourful pastries that vary with the seasons. They have become so popular that the café was named Café of the Year 2025 at Gotland's Restaurant Gala.

Siesta

Café institution

Café Siesta is practically an institution, with retro furnishings and left-wing political messages on the walls. Come here for the authentic vibes, a chat with the cheerful owner or a regular, the recurring themed evenings, or just to drink a perfectly ordinary cup of coffee. You can find Siesta among the chain stores on Öster, where they also have an outdoor seating area in the courtyard.

Café Amalia

Colourful and trendy

This popular café is handily placed near Stora torget and has a rather cool basement section where you can sit and cosy up in the dark. The Instagram-friendly pastries are served on colourful plates, and the menu includes both sweet and savoury items such as hearty salads, porridge, brunch plates and indulgent carrot cake. As well as the café on Stora torget, Amalia runs the café at Fornsalen.

Sankt Hans Café

Outdoor seating in the ruins

Right next to the Sankt Hans church ruins is the café of the same name – Sankt Hans. The café is open year-round, but you're better off visiting in the spring and summer when the ruin is used as outdoor seating. True romance, Visby style .

Danskens

Smørrebrød and beer

Danskens Kök & Bar is perhaps more of a restaurant than a café, but thanks to the menu that largely consists of smørrebrød - Danish open sandwiches - they still earn their rightful place on this list. Danskens is located right next to Almedalen and is, as you would expect, run by a Dane, hence the name and the menu, which drinks-wise focuses on beer and 'a little one', i.e, a shot of snaps. Don't miss the quiz nights and gigs.

Själsö Bageri

Artisanal bakery

Själsö Bageri lies a few kilometres outside town but still attracts plenty of guests with its breads, buns and beautiful pastries. In the summer months you can sit and enjoy ice cream in the sun on the outdoor seating area and take in the views of the sea, and they also have several bread vans around Gotland, one of which is in Öster.

Café Kubanen

Trip to the farm

A few kilometres south of Visby, in Västerhejde, you'll find Café Kubanen on a farm. Drive, cycle or walk through the leafy avenue to reach the intimate café, furnished with mismatched furniture and a rustic feel.

Krukmakarens Café

Coffee and cake in the rose garden

Under the medieval arches on charming Mellangatan in the centre of Visby, The Salvation Army brews Fairtrade coffee and bakes sweet and savoury treats. Simple lunches in the form of salads and sandwiches are also served. In the summer you can eat and drink in the rose garden.

H10 Bar & Café

Modern café

The H10 Market shopping mall on Hästgatan includes a modern café, H10 Bar & Café, which serves everything from breakfast and lunch to coffee and cake, and, during the winter months, aperitivo. Start the day with homemade bread, yoghurt, smoothies, eggs, croissants, juice, overnight oats and freshly brewed coffee and continue a little later on with lunch, which ranges from hearty salads to raggmunk potato pancakes with fried pork. The interior is in a classically trendy café style with chequered floors, globe lamps, colourful tiles and a counter clad in wood.

Gute Glass

Oodles of ice cream

Gotland's ice-cream craftsmanship is not to be scoffed at, especially Gute Glass, which makes its ice cream from authentic, natural ingredients. Choose from traditional flavours such as vanilla or chocolate, or go for something exciting like coffee sorbet or honey and saffron – or why not an organic soft-serve? If you're lucky you might snag a spot on the balcony, where you can admire the sunset in the evenings.

Ett Rum För Resande Café

Italian café and restaurant

Ett Rum För Resande is a cross between a café and a restaurant. At the start of the week it's only open during the day, with fresh pasta made from scratch, sandwiches and salads as well as sweet pastries and coffee, while weekends also include evenings. The concept is Italian – not just the menu, but also the atmosphere and the charming premises with a checkered floor and sturdy wooden furniture. In the summer you can warm yourself in the sun on the outdoor terrace and dream of Italy.

Mirells

Green is good

Mirells is a fully vegan café that offers vibrant dishes and a clear commitment to sustainability. They serve everything from Asian-inspired bowls and sandwiches to homemade pastries, raw cakes and organic coffee. Sit down in the bright café or take a seat outside during the summer months.
