If your January plans could use a bit of fresh air (and a hint of folk tradition), Wassail Day at Dulwich Village Orchard is back this winter. Hosted by London Wildlife Trust, this free community event revives an ancient custom that's all about singing to apple trees to encourage a good harvest later in the year.

Taking place on Saturday 17 January, the afternoon blends old rituals with a bit of family fun. You can expect an orchard tour, apple-themed crafts, and the ceremonial pinning of toast to trees (yes, really), which, according to tradition, helps keep the apple spirits happy. There's also warming bread on the fire if the weather behaves, plus refreshments available to buy.

Live folk music from local band Larkin' the Woods runs from 2pm–3pm, adding to the relaxed, village feel. It's not a swanky festival setup – and that's kind of the point. Just come prepared for mud underfoot if it's been raining, and keep dogs on a lead. It's a gentle, feel-good way to spend a few winter hours outdoors this winter.
