Bread Ahead, the cult Borough Market bakery and baking school, is marking Sourdough September in style. Since 2013, founder Matthew Jones has grown the bakery from a humble three-product menu – sourdough bread, brownies, and amaretti biscuits – into a baking hotspot offering over 40 in-person and online workshops.
Sourdough is at the heart of it all. The bakery's first starter, affectionately named “Brucey” after Revd Canon Bruce Saunders, has been thriving for 12 years, spawning countless “baby Bruce” starters through Bread Ahead's workshops. Now, this September, the bakery is launching Sourdough Starter School, a hands-on 90-minute workshop for £25 that teaches all the essentials of sourdough. Participants get to make their own starter to take home, plus a bag of flour, a dough scraper, and step-by-step guidance to get it ready for baking into the perfect loaf. Classes run on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays from September 12 until the end of November.

For those wanting to go further, Bread Ahead is also offering longer courses, from half-day introductions to three-day intensive masterclasses, covering everything from basic techniques to a deeper dive into the art of sourdough. Every workshop comes with expert tuition, full recipes, and the chance to take home your own creations.

“Sourdough has always been at the heart of Bread Ahead,” says Matthew Jones. “Sourdough September is the perfect time to explore the art of baking, whether you're completely new or already passionate about it.”
Whether you're after a first try at making sourdough or looking to further your skills, Bread Ahead makes it easy – and delicious – to celebrate the humble loaf. Tickets can be booked here.
