International Chess Day is taking over Old Spitalfields Market on Sunday, July 20. Whether you're a total beginner or fancy yourself the next Magnus Carlsen, this one is for all levels and is totally free.

From 10am to 3pm, the market's Commercial Street entrance will be transformed into an open-air chess club, with boards set up for spontaneous playing and strategic showdowns. It's all in collaboration with Chess in Schools, a brilliant charity bringing the game to classrooms across the UK.

Expect plenty of chances to test your skills, meet fellow players, or just hang out and soak up the atmosphere. If you can't make the main event, no stress, Chess & Chill is running every Thursday from 6pm all summer long.
