Surfing in London usually involves a train to Cornwall, an early start, and praying the waves aren't flat when you finally get there. But that might all change soon, because Surf London – the capital's first inland surf lagoon – has just received planning approval from Enfield Council.
This purpose-built surf pool is set to transform parts of Lee Valley Park, promising guaranteed waves, a man-made beach, and enough space for both beginners and more experienced surfers to get their fix without leaving the city, meaning we're all one step closer to being able to paddle out on our lunch breaks.
The project, run by Crest Experiences, isn't just about catching waves; plans also include new cycling and walking routes, a focus on biodiversity and green spaces, and facilities such as food spots, yoga areas, camping and glamping, plus an activity zone for when you need a break from the water. Basically, it's as much a wellness retreat as it is a surf park.
“We strive to provide opportunities that attract people from across London, Essex, Hertfordshire and beyond to enjoy Lee Valley Regional Park, and we feel Surf London has the potential to be a truly outstanding new leisure attraction,” says Shaun Dawson, Chief Executive of Lee Valley Regional Park Authority.
It still needs sign-off from the Greater London Authority, but if approved, Surf London could become the UK's most ambitious urban surf destination. Whether you're a seasoned surfer or just someone who's always fancied giving it a go, hopefully, soon, you won't need to head to the coast to make it happen.
