Aussies were the pioneers of the coffee and café culture, so it's very exciting to hear that the Australian café-restaurant Abuelo has opened its new spot on Cavendish Place in the heart of London. This venture is the second site in London for the mother-daughter duo, who have been making waves since they opened spot #1 back in 2018 in Covent Garden.
The interiors of the new coffee spot are sleek, sexy, and sophisticated, setting the scene for an aesthetically grid-worthy meal. There are big communal tables, vintage chairs sourced straight from the Netherlands and a statement marble counter created from offcuts of marble that would've otherwise gone to waste. We love to see it.
By day, indulge in breakfast favourites and ethically sourced Latin American coffee, with a menu featuring Aussie-style brunch with a Latin twist—think Abuelo Cubano, Peruvian chicken sandwich, and Mango and passionfruit compote on brioche.
But the fun doesn't stop there. By night, Abuelo transforms into an ambient natural wine bar, offering a selection of nostalgic small sharing plates like Smashed 'chicken' salt potatoes, Sloppy Jose, half Peruvian roast chicken with Aji Verde, artisanal deli meats and cheeses, and Vegemite salted caramel brioche. Is it even Aussie if it doesn't feature Vegemite? Abuelo's got it covered. Sip on Tayer and Elementary cocktails, explore natural wines from small producers, and groove to live DJ sets on Saturday nights.
Co-founder Cloe De La Vega says, “The design-led venue serves elevated yet casual food alongside delicious coffee and friendly service and incorporates a home-away-from-home feel. We want people to come in, sit back, relax, and feel as if they are sitting in someone's kitchen.”
