It's a big week for art, architecture, and design fans in the capital as the 2023 Serpentine Pavilion in Hyde Park is unveiled. This year's pavilion for the Serpentine Galleries has been designed by architect Lina Ghotmeh and opens on 9th June with special events planned to tie in with the launch.
Titled 'À table', the work is inspired by Ghotmeh's Mediterranean heritage and the discussions that take place around a table. The work's title refers to the French language call to be seated around a table. The pavilion's interior features a circular table around its perimeter that encourages visitors to come together, share ideas, and form new connections.
Sustainability is a key feature in Ghotmeh's work and the pavilion is built primarily out of bio-sourced and low-carbon materials. Intended to create a dialogue with the environment of the park around it, the shape of this year's pavilion is a response to the canopies of trees in Hyde Park, with its roof inspired by the structure of a palm leaf. An accompanying soundscape for the pavilion has been created by artist and composer Tarek Atoui, based on Ghotmeh's architectural drawings for the pavilion, the materials used to construct it, and Atoui's ongoing research into rural and classical Arab music.
The opening of the pavilion takes place on 9th June and on 7th June guests can join Ghotmeh in conversation with Hans Ulrich Obrist, creative director of the Serpentine Galleries and all-round art world superstar. Design fans can check out the pavilion until 29th October.
