Any art lover worth their salt in London is familiar with iconic artist duo Gilbert & George. If you're a fan then you'll soon be able to immerse yourself in their work even more with the opening of The Gilbert & George Centre in Spitalfields. In their typically-comic fashion, the pair will be opening the centre for the first time on 1st April. Initially only open three days per week, the goal is to expand the opening hours as the centre becomes more established.
Describing itself as a cultural centre, at the venue you'll be able to see changing exhibitions of work by Gilbert & George. One or two shows will be put on each year, along with initiatives to ensure a broad demographic is able to engage with the works. The venue will also be a centre for art research. School and educational groups will be welcomed. Housed in a converted brewery, the imposing wrought-iron gates at the entrance will bear the initials of King Charles III, and it's believed that this will be the first cultural centre in the UK to have this feature.
Gilbert & George first burst onto the UK art scene in the 1960s and have been a fixture in London ever since. Considering themselves as one artist in the bodies of two people, their work explores a huge range of subjects all inspired by modern life.
