Skehan's Free House
Like something out of a colouring book, Skehan's Free House is a picturesque little pub in New Cross, right next to Nunhead station. It's a London favourite not just because of its visual appeal, but also because it's one of the increasingly rare independent, family-run pubs in the city.
It's also quite a lively place, whether you're looking for a place to hang out at and chat up future friends, or attend one of the many events that go on throughout the week. There's an emphasis on live music, with regular events four times a week, including jam sessions you're welcome to join, karaoke nights, concerts and folk music sessions. The pub also features two screens with separate channels for sports fans, as well as a pool table and darts out front.
The traditional front bar is a welcoming, cosy room with a wood burning stove to brighten gloomy winter days, and the large outdoor smoking area in the front is its own draw for many. During summer, however, you'd be hard-pressed to find a nicer place for a pint than the beautiful garden hidden in the back, where you can relax surrounded by greenery. The garden also includes a restaurant with an extensive menu of Thai specialties such as pad Thai, chow mein, various curries, tamarind duck and more. The pub also does burger and pizza nights and Sunday roasts, so you won't be going hungry anytime soon. And before you leave, make sure to check out the spectacular view of the London skyline!
