The Grenadier
No, the ceiling isn't covered in money because The Grenadier is located in the affluent Belgravia neighbourhood – there's actually an intriguing ghost story behind that. The ceiling isn't this fine establishment's only claim to fame, however.
So, as the story goes, the pub is named after Cedric, a foolhardy soldier who was caught cheating at cards and beaten to death. The money hanging from the ceiling is the pub's patrons' attempt to pay young Cedric's debt, but he must have been in for quite a large amount, as he apparently still haunts the premises …
Spooky tales aside, The Grenadier is also famed for its Beef Wellington, a highlight on a menu that consists of classic pub grub such as fish 'n' chips, grilled bream, a veggie curry and more, as well as desserts such as sticky toffee pudding and chocolate fondant. The accompanying wine list features both Old World classics and New World picks, and there's plenty of beers and other drinks to choose from as well.
Apart from the money-covered ceiling, the interior of the pub recalls its origins as an officers' mess, with army regalia and military-themed decorations on the wall adding to the elegance of the red leather and wood furnishings. Located in a secluded spot between Green Park and Hyde Park, The Grenadier's atmosphere transports you to another time and place – just make sure to keep an eye out for Cedric.
