This pub is formerly known as The Hero of Maida and is a venture from Phil Winser and James Gummer, the creative duo behind the iconic gastropub The Pelican. It was built in 1878 and boasts an interesting history, which has been preserved while adding in contemporary design elements during its recent revamp. The renovation highlights the pub's original features, which span four floors.
On the first floor, The Grill offers a more upmarket dining experience, specialising in seasonal dishes centred around meats and fish cooked over an open flame. It's all complemented by signature sharing dishes. The Library on the second floor provides a cosy, quieter setting for enjoying a cocktail or two. Guests can also enjoy classic cocktails and curation of vinyl DJs every Friday and Saturday. At the very top, the private event space is for more exclusive gatherings or celebrations. It even has its own dedicated bar.
Produce is a big thing at The Hero, and the market garden at Bruern Farms, overseen by head grower Thomas, supplies fresh vegetables directly, with a focus on holistic soil management. It also serves as a source of inspiration for the chefs when creating menus and provides the team with hands-on opportunities to learn about harvesting and the food-growing process, strengthening their connection to the supply chain. Produce is harvested and delivered on the same day, ensuring minimal food miles, resulting in fresher, longer-lasting, more nutrient-rich ingredients.
The pub also hosts various events, such as sound baths, craft workshops and live Dj sessions, just check their website to see what's happening and when.
