Stepping into Libreria means stepping into a seemingly endless galaxy of books thanks to the bright yellow bookshelves stretching into the distance and the mirrored ceiling courting infinity above.

The trendy Spitalfields bookstore was designed by acclaimed Spanish architects SelgasCano. In addition to the clever use of optics to expand the space, Libreria features numerous cosy nooks with comfy chairs to take a reading break in. Forget about dropping by just for some quick Instagram clout, however. In a call-back to pre-digital times, the bookshop enforces a strict “no phones” policy, letting nothing disturb the tranquillity of this haven for booklovers.

Speaking of books, the offer at Libreria is not as extensive as at other similar bookstores, as the selection is carefully curated by the owners. The curation process is ongoing, however, so the titles keep changing and you can be sure there’s something new to be found every time you pop in.

The organisation of the books on the shelves also defies the norm, as instead of genres, the books are arranged according to broad themes, for example “Wanderlust”, “Enchantment for the Disenchanted” and “Mothers, Madonnas and Whores”. Combined with the curated selection and the welcoming atmosphere, it’s all designed to help you discover new favourites and expand your literary horizons.

Libreria also regularly holds talks, signings and other cultural events.
