The Lalit London
This Victorian grammar school turned hotel on Tooley Street is ideally located for those who want to enjoy riverside strolls and breakfast at Borough Market. The red-brick building was a grammar school for boys from 1835 to 1968. Although much of the old school's structure is still in place, like towering ceilings and original beams, you won't find any classroom-themed paraphernalia inside; these days, it's more bold colours, Indian hanging textiles and items reminiscent of a Bombay palace.
Rooms are bright and colourful, and many used to be old classrooms throughout the building's grammar school period. You'll find burnt-orange fabrics threaded with Indian textiles and beds featuring huge headboards with bold patterns. Bathrooms are kitted out with Toto Japanese toilets, known for their automatic seat warming, sprays and deodorisation. Some rooms even have epic views of The Shard, and The Thames Suite has unbeatable views of the river.
Dinner at the Baluchi restaurant in the foyer assembly hall is a memorable experience. They serve Pan-Indian cuisine packed with spice and flavour, like Goan fish curry and saffron kulfi. There's also a menu of classic cocktails and soft drinks.
