Smokehouse

At Islington restaurant Smokehouse, the quality and provenance of ingredients is key. This contemporary bar and eatery is a specialist in barbecuing, serving eclectic dishes with a variety of global influences. Ingredients are sourced from small suppliers wherever possible and food is grilled over charcoal or roasted and smoked with sustainably-sourced English oak wood. 

The à la carte menu at Smokehouse includes dishes like hot smoked chalk stream trout, smoked chicken with chanterelles and tarragon, and 1.1kg of Hereford tomahawk steak. This is a sophisticated take on barbecuing. In addition to the main menu, on Sundays there's an indulgent menu with four types of roast to choose from, including a vegetarian-friendly cauliflower cheese option. For bigger groups you can enjoy family-style feasts of dishes to share including crispy beef salad and smoked lamb knuckle. The drinks list is a lengthy one, with 20 different craft beers on tap, plus a further 40 bottled options. The wines are sourced from family producers and small cooperatives. 

The interior at Smokehouse is airy and rustic with wooden furniture, herb boxes, and hand-written menus and information on chalkboards. You can also enjoy a meal here al fresco. There's a pavement terrace that's great for people-watching as well as a spacious garden that feels secluded, lined with lots of greenery and heaters for when it gets chilly. If you're looking for an upscale incarnation of cooking over fire, Smokehouse is a must-visit.
