Sweetings
Sweetings is a classic British seafood restaurant that’s open for lunch only. Serving a traditional bill of fare rather than a menu, fish is the main player here. Whether you fancy lobster bisque, luxurious caviar, or fried, grilled, or poached fish, Sweetings has something to offer. Homemade favourite desserts are on the menu, and wine is also available by the glass and bottle.
It’s been serving all of the seafood classics since it first opened over 130 years ago, and every dish evokes a sentimental sense of nostalgia. The food is further enjoyed by the no-frills, white table-clothed interior, decked out with wooden tables and stalls, with walls pasted with old-school paintings.
It would be impossible to count how many oysters Londoners have wolfed down here since 1889, but it’s certainly in the tens of thousands. Other dishes include homemade gravadlax, potted shrimps, skate wing with black butter sauce and even Welsh rarebit. There’s also a selection of sides, like potatoes, fried, mashed or new, and creamed or buttered spinach. The timeless desserts are a menu mainstay - apple pie, baked jam roll, spotted dick and steamed syrup pudding.
