More than twenty years have passed since this stylish Japanese restaurant first opened just off of Clapham High Street, but it’s still regarded as one of the top spots for sushi and cocktails in the area.

Admittedly, the venue did undergo a facelift in 2015, updating its interior for a sleek, contemporary ambiance that wouldn’t feel out of place even in the more upscale parts of Central London. The large geisha mural adorning the brickwork façade has its counterpart inside, a large Japanese-themed street art piece above the leather banquettes along one of the walls. Combined with the delicate lamps, dark polished furniture and intricate wooden screens, the overall setting has a luxurious feel to it.

The menu at Tsunami spans the full range of Japanese delicacies, from classic and special sushi rolls, nigiri, sashimi and tempura to mains such as truffle tofu, roast duck, grilled Scottish Angus rib-eye with spicy sauce, teriyaki salmon and more. Salads and appetisers are available as well, along with a selection of desserts – if you can’t choose your favourite, you can even opt for the dessert platter and share.

The Tsunami restaurant also has its own elegant bar, which has been carefully stocked with fine wines and sakes designed to complement the varied flavours and textures of the contemporary Japanese food on offer. An assortment of whiskies from Japanese distilleries is available, with tasting flights provided as well, and the cocktail list features creative house concoctions such as the Lychee Martini or the Drunken Melon, made using Zubrowka vodka and a watermelon & matcha reduction.
