"A la Cubana": A tribute to Cuban guitar music

Guitarist Nikos Baroutsakis is presenting “A la cubana”, a live realisation of his eponymous debut album that pays tribute to Cuban guitar music. The album — recorded at Abbey Road Studios — represents the culmination of years of work exploring Cuban repertoire, with clear inspiration drawn from the sound world of the Buena Vista Social Club.

The recording features two newly commissioned works written specifically for Baroutsakis: “Toccata cubana” by Leo Brouwer and “Rincones habaneros” by Eduardo Martín, both dedicated to the guitarist.

Born in Athens, Baroutsakis is a classically trained guitarist whose interests span multiple musical traditions. “A la cubana” frames Cuban guitar idioms through a classical lens, highlighting the meeting point between formal technique and popular Cuban styles.
