The National Maritime Museum's major new exhibition, “Pirates”, opens in Greenwich in March 2025, uncovering the truth behind pirate life. It explores how pirates have been portrayed in popular culture, from comical figures like Captain Pugwash to infamous anti-heroes like Captain Jack Sparrow.

While often seen as charming rogues, the reality of piracy is far more complex and sometimes brutal. The exhibition traces the global history of piracy, from the South China Sea to North Africa, and even examines the challenges of modern piracy. Visitors will learn about legendary figures such as Blackbeard, William Kidd, Anne Bonny, and Mary Read.

Through historical artefacts and stories, “Pirates” sheds light on how our understanding of pirates has evolved over time. The exhibition promises an immersive journey into the myths and realities of these notorious seafarers.

“Pirates” opens at the National Maritime Museum on 29 March. You can find out more and book tickets here.
