Celebrate a unique part of London's culture with a creative workshop

The Pearly Kings and Queens of London are a unique part of the city's culture, with a history going back to the 19th century. They're an instantly recognisable part of the capital's community and maintain a lifelong commitment to raising funds for charitable causes. On 16th March there's a fun opportunity to learn more about these iconic individuals with a creative workshop at East London's Whitechapel Gallery.

As part of the second annual Modern Cockney Festival, British-Bangladeshi artist Saif Osmani is leading a free workshop at the gallery that's suitable for all ages. During this drop-in workshop, you'll have the chance to learn more about the Pearlies' distinctive clothing and create your own personalised design based on a bowler hat, burka, or kilt. You can also make your own Cockney Chat badge, inspired by the various badges offered by TfL for passengers, as well as make your own zine that takes a Cockney character on an adventure through collage, drawing, and writing.

The event runs between 12-5pm on 16th March in Whitechapel Gallery's Creative Studio. The Modern Cockney Festival 2024 runs between 3rd March and 3rd April, with fun Cockney-themed events going on all over the country. Find out more about the event on Whitechapel Gallery's website.
