This weekend, the British Library will be transformed into the setting of a “Midsummer Night's Dream” in celebration of the summer solstice. The event will feature performances from DJs, musicians, storytellers, pantomimes and so much more.
Artists, storytellers, DJs, costumes and carnivalesque processions will provide the entertainment for a magical night at the British Library, culminating in a live show by the extraordinary Mermaid Chunky, an experimental audio-visual and electronic art-pop duo from the UK, and their fabulous friends. You can expect funky and pastoral electronica, playful performances and colourful costumes from the Mermaid Chunky cohort. They have become renowned for their solstice parties.
In addition to the standout performance from Mermaid Chunky, the DJ, writer and broadcaster Zakia Sewell will be giving a talk on her acclaimed new book “Finding Albion: Myth, Folklore and the Quest for a Hidden Britain”, and will then return to close the night with a special DJ set. There will also be the world's first light and sound system maypole set up, an Andean panpipe orchestra, pantomime performances from Half Pint Theatre, a costume clown collective and so many more vibrant displays.
After the performances, there will also be ample opportunity to discover the British Library's new "Fairy Tales" exhibition late into the night, offering an extra opportunity to enjoy the exhibition outside of normal hours. This is also included in the ticket price.
