The Bayeux Tapestry is an 11th-century embroidered cloth which spans almost 70 metres in length and details one of the most important events in Britain's history. This September it will return to our shores for a long-awaited exhibition at the British Museum.

There are few dates as memorable or as deeply ingrained in the collective consciousness as 1066 and the Battle of Hastings. This was the last successful invasion of Britain, the inception of the modern monarchy and the thrilling battle woven across the length of the Bayeux Tapestry.

The Norman conquest of England is retold through each stitch of this remarkable example of medieval artistry. The events are recounted through the lens of the Norman conquerors and culminate in a dramatic portrayal of the Battle of Hastings. There are moments of heroism, triumphant victory and brutal defeat.

More than simply relaying chronological events, this masterpiece also offers a glimpse into life in 11th-century England. It is populated with castles, ships, military figures and inscriptions, but perhaps just as importantly, everyday depictions of food, furniture and clothing, items which help us better understand the lives of ordinary people in the 11th century.

The Tapestry was probably commissioned by a Norman patron and made by English embroiderers in Canterbury. Since then it has been displayed in various locations across France before settling in the dedicated Bayeux Museum. Now, almost 1000 years since its creation, the tapestry will be on loan to the British Museum from September 2026 to July 2027. This is a rare moment to see a historic treasure and remarkable work of art, truly an unmissable exhibition.
