On Tuesday, 20 June, this year's selection of The World's 50 Best Restaurants was revealed at an awards ceremony in Valencia. Three of London's restaurants made the cut, while the top spot went to South America for the first time ever.
The World's 50 Best Restaurants 2023 awards are one of the foodie highlights of the year, highlighting the best of the best in the restaurant business. The list is compiled from votes by nearly 1,100 independent experts – acclaimed chefs, restaurant critics, and others – and it represents one of the highest honours a restaurant can attain.
Anticipation was high for London restaurants after positions 51-100 on the list were unveiled a couple of weeks prior to the main event, with three of the city's restaurants making the list. Interestingly, that same number of London restaurants made it to the Top 50 as well, which is one more than last year.
As anticipated, Marylebone's Michelin-starred Mexican restaurant Kol made it onto the list, and despite being a new entry, ranked the highest of the London-based restaurants – #23. It was joined by Ikoyi in #35 (up from #49 last year) and The Clove Club in #38 (down from #35). All in all a strong showing by the city's dining scene and an improvement on last year's results.
As for the coveted top spot, this year it went to Central in Lima, Peru, which made history as the first South American venue to take home the big prize.
