The best pubs in Stoke Newington
A Stokey mainstay
You'll find the Rose & Crown at the end of Church Street, right by the entrance to the leafy Clissold Park. It was rebuilt in the early 1930s opposite its original location and has been run by the same family since 1985. It's a classic London boozer with huge windows, a long wooden bar and plenty of seating. They serve all the classic pub drinks on tap plus a banging Sunday roast with all the trimmings.

A slice of Irish charm
The Auld Shillelagh has earned the title of one of the best Irish pubs in the world, outside of Ireland, that is. They claim to pour one of the best pints of Guinness in the city and often host live Irish music nights. It looks small from the outside but is fairly big inside, with a rear beer garden for al fresco drinks.

Go for the garden
The Axe is a relatively new pub compared to its neighbours and has been around since 2017. Inside, it's simple, but it's all about the garden with wooden decking, trailing vines and sheltered areas. There are 22 tap lines, including local and international brews and a variety of bottles and cans. If you're more of an oenophile, there are also natural and low-intervention wines, spirits and cocktails. The food is all made with local produce, including a range of British and European favourites prepared with high quality ingredients.

A lush, leafy beer garden
The White Hart has been around since the 17th century and is a lovely spot to enjoy a tipple or two in the heart of Stokey. It's mainly renowned for its incredible, leafy beer garden, which is adorned with hanging ivy and feels more like a secret garden. Expect all the traditional pub drinks plus a menu of classics like fish and chips and hearty bangers and mash.

Stokey in a nutshell
The Clarence Tavern is the place to go in Stoke Newington if you want a top-notch Sunday roast. It's another fairly new pub compared to its siblings but is a firm neighbourhood favourite. Everything about The Clarence Tavern screams Stoke Newington; it's trendy, a little bit rustic but sophisticated, with an (almost) unnecessarily long wine list. The food isn't something to be sniffed at either, expect classy British classics made with seasonal produce, like chicken, leek, bacon and wild garlic pie served with buttered greens.

A top-notch roast
The Londesborough was built in 1864 as a safe space for the community to come together and mingle, including the notorious Kray twins. It's everything you might expect a traditional London watering hole to be: a large oak bar, hanging chandeliers, and a dark, pub-like interior. Drinks are as you expect, and the food is classic pub grub, but they're renowned for their Sunday roast, like the shoulder of lamb stuffed with carrot and apricots, Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes, greens and roasted roots doused in a pool of gravy.

This historic pub on Church Street has been serving the community since its heyday as an inn back in 1697. Now, it's a neighbourhood favourite where you can chow down on Flatboys pizza with a freshly poured pint while watching live sports on the big screen in the lush beer garden. Take a stroll in neighbouring Clissold Park after.

It's more than just a pub; it also houses The Waiting Room, where artists from London and beyond come to perform and showcase their talent. Alongside the range of classic pub drinks, they also serve a seasonal menu of British dishes using locally sourced produce.

Indian fare and rare beers
The Jolly Butchers in Stokey was voted as one of the best 10 pubs in Britain by The Guardian, thanks to its impressive range of ales, ciders, craft beers, lagers and stouts, including some rare beer brands. There's a menu of contemporary Indian cuisine to keep you suitably full, like double-cut lamb chops and kaddu curry.
