Where to find the best spice bags in London

Once a late-night Irish takeaway staple, the spice bag has slowly but surely found its people in London. What began as a crumpled paper bag of chips, chicken, peppers and tasty Chinese-style seasoning now shows up in City pubs, Irish boozers and the odd sit-down spot, usually within arm's reach of a pint of Guinness. Some places keep things traditional, while others play with new flavours and twists on the classics. These are the London spots getting spice bags right.

Where to enjoy spice bags in the city

Scaldy's at Feeney's Lloyds Avenue

A City spice bag standby

Feeney's near Tower Hill is a chilled City pub where spice bags arrive courtesy of Irish-Chinese outfit Scaldy. Order at the bar, grab a Guinness, and consider heading upstairs, where leather seating and racing prints soften the office-hour vibes. The spice bag comes in a white paper sack, filled with chips and chicken, beef or tofu, plus seasoned peppers and onions. It's also served with a mild curry sauce that pulls together everything nicely.

The Pineapple

A pub with Irish roots

Situated just south of the river, The Pineapple is an old Irish pub where Guinness is taken seriously, and the interiors are all dark wood and fireplaces. Alongside the familiar pub grub, you'll find a traditional Irish spice bag that feels slightly off-brand in a Waterloo boozer, but makes sense when you remember its Irish roots. It's the classic combo of chips, chicken, peppers and seasoning, best ordered with a pint and enjoyed with pals.

Molly Mc's

An Irish pub turned social hub

At Molly Mc's, the spice bag is built for pints. This Irish singing pub in Southwark serves a version loaded with popcorn chicken, chips, hot peppers and spring onions, finished with plenty of curry sauce. It's less takeaway vibes and more something to order for the table, especially when the room is busy with post-work crowds. The atmosphere is loud, sociable and slightly performative. Come during peak hours and expect your spice bag to arrive alongside Guinness and a fair bit of singing.

Paddy's Yard

Spice bags front and centre

Paddy's Yard in Brixton puts its own stamp on the Irish spice bag, keeping the familiar combo of crispy chicken, chips, onions and peppers but turning up the seasoning. Brandiece's Irish Spice Bag is packed with authentic Irish flavours, with dishes that nod to Caribbean cuisine elsewhere on the menu. It's perfect whether you're sharing plates or eating solo with a pint, with a setting that keeps things casual and and very Brixton.

Paddy Wok

An Irish-Chinese original

Paddy Wok is a proper Irish-Chinese takeaway, built around the kind of spice bag most Irish people grew up with. The version here is as classic as it gets, made with crispy salt-and-chilli chicken, chips, onions and peppers, all tossed together in a wok with seasoning that sticks. Portions are hearty and generous, with optional curry sauce. It's more of a takeaway spot, but clearly designed by someone who understands exactly what a spice bag should taste like.

The Raglan

Spice bags in E17

The Raglan in Walthamstow takes the takeaway spice bag and gives it a pub-style upgrade. This is a big, sharing plate built around deep-fried chicken pieces, chunky potatoes, peppers and onions, all piled high and served with a proper curry sauce on the side. It's less about eating from a paper bag and more about sitting down with a drink and taking your time. It's also tossed with raw onions for a zingy edge, and the portions are properly generous, so it's more than enough to share with one or two others.

The Stag

Curried chicken spice bag

The Stag's roots go back to the 1800s, but a refurbishment in early 2026 has given the pub a fresh lease of life without losing its traditional charm. The menu at the relaunched pub now also includes a bold curried chicken spice bag, which you can enjoy alongside a changing line-up of craft beers on tap and a seasonally driven martini menu. It's the perfect snack when watching a sports match here too.
