Discover a unique space that feels far removed from London by visiting Painshill in Surrey. It’s a fab place for an interesting day trip or a great place to go if you’re spending a few days nearby in Cobham. This park is a fine example of an 18th century landscaped garden, but it comes with lots of little extras you won’t want to miss. The variety of things to see will easily keep you occupied.

Painshill was created between 1738 and 1773 by Charles Hamilton, inspired by landscape paintings and the grand tours of Europe of the day. What makes it stand out is the numerous follies you’ll encounter as you make your way around the grounds, transforming the landscape into a piece of living art. Audio tours are available if you want to learn more.

At the heart of it all you’ll find a 14 acre lake brimming with wildlife. Venture around the grounds and you’ll find a crystal grotto with 10,000 crystals, a rustic wooden cottage hidden in the trees, distinctive temples that offer spectacular views, fairytale towers, and man-made ruins. You’ll also discover plants and flowers, and Painshill’s vineyard overlooking the lake.

Painshill has a gift shop where you can purchase a special memento of your visit, including sparkling wine made from the vineyard’s grapes. You’re free to bring a picnic with you but there’s also a tea room with cakes, sandwiches, pastries, and hot and cold drinks. If you come here you won’t actually be far from London but you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into another world.
