Surrey park full of follies

Painshill is a fab day trip from London or a good place to visit if you're staying in nearby Cobham. Created between 1738 and 1773, this is a glorious landscaped garden full of intriguing follies like a crystal grotto and gothic tower. It has its own vineyard and makes sparkling wine too.

Berkhamsted Castle

Built in the 1760s, Scott's Grotto in Hertfordshire is the country's most expansive shell grotto. This interesting structure is covered in fossils and shells.
