Chourangi
A relative newcomer on London’s Indian dining scene, Chourangi specialises in highlighting the intense and exhilarating flavours of Calcutta, a city with a diverse cultural heritage that is reflected in its culinary offering.
The decor at this restaurant next to the Marble Arch tube station combines rattan-stained furniture and cream walls, capturing the grand colonial architecture of the city it pays tribute to. The subdued lighting and wood tones help create an elegant yet welcoming atmosphere, while the terrace out front is just the thing for a spot of al fresco dining.
Speaking of dining, the menu at Chourangi ventures deep into the alleys of Calcutta, using fresh, carefully sourced ingredients to bring out the city’s intense street food flavours and give them a contemporary twist. The authentic dishes include freshly baked naans, parathas and rotis, tandooris, small plates of Chingri cutlets or beetroot chop, large curries and seasonal vegetable biryani. If you’re looking for a bit of extra kick, Tangra chilli specialties pack quite the Scoville punch and might have you reaching hastily for one of the house cocktails or a glass off the quite comprehensive wine list.
Chourangi also offers a selection of traditional desserts and hot drinks, including the popular masala chai. If you drop by during lunchtime, you can order a three- or four-course set menu that includes a starter, a tandoor, a main and/or dessert, as well as some sides.
