Whether you're in the mood for a big smart dinner or just a beer and something to tickle your tastebuds with, Kungsportshusets Matbar is the kind of place you can just swing by any time. The kitchen works with local produce and you can accompany every dish with a suitable glass of snaps. The restaurant's long history of food and festivities gives it a particularly warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Gothenburg had a lively restaurant scene back in the 17th century, particularly around the city's southern gate, Kungsporten. Some places have gone down in history despite - or perhaps because of - the fact that they were run without a licence and often saw some serious party action. One of them was KPH, Kungsportshuset Matbar, in those days a popular watering hole for anyone with a hankering for cheap beer and food. KPH is now back in a new incarnation, but the jolly atmosphere and rustic spirit remain. The fact that several centuries' worth of festivities have taken place here is almost tangible.
The menu is inspired by the area's history and the produce used is seasonal and locally sourced. Swedish meat, fish and shellfish from the surrounding area, as well as foraged forest delicacies such as spruce oil and cloudberries, are always on the menu. If you prefer not to eat meat, you'll find excellent vegetarian options made from locally-produced ingredients.
The intention is that Kungsportshuset Matbar should feel just like a second home. Guests can choose whether they want to go for a classic á la carte meal with starter, main course and dessert, or would rather order one or two small dishes. The restaurant is passionate about pairing food and drink and they offer wine packages and a large selection of beers, as well as being self-proclaimed experts in combining food with snaps.
A daily lunch special is served every day, with updated classic Swedish dishes. Fridays are a favourite at KPH, when the restaurant throngs with after-workers enjoying food and drink at great happy hour prices. During the warmer months of the year the al fresco dining area on the square, with its ultimate sun and people-watching position, is the place to be.
