New restaurants in Gothenburg

Hasselsson have made a name for themselves with their fish and shellfish-based street food, which has several branches in Gothenburg and one in Stockholm. They're now planning a “Hasselsson 2.0” on Drottninggatan. The new Hasselsson has an open kitchen and pared-back interiors that reflect the harbour and the city's fishing culture. Seating is available both inside and outside, as well as at the bar counter.

Some major changes have taken place at Brahegatan 10, now home to Tycho. They call their cuisine Continental and don't limit themselves to any specific country, but mix and match flavours from all over Europe and use fresh ingredients in season.

Cocktails, "crazy golf" and pizza are the order of the day at the Underground Golf Club, the Norwegian concept that's taken over the legendary Sticky Fingers premises. They aim to create a nice place to play mini golf, with exceptional sound and lighting. The restaurant serves pizza and drinks for anyone who gets hungry and thirsty.

Ego Distillers has established itself in one of Gamlestaden's red-brick factory building, thereby, according to them, establishing Gothenburg's coolest distillery and cocktail bar.

Spanish flavours take centre stage at Bar el Guiri. The restaurant consists of four sub-concepts including a pintxos bar, a classic restaurant with an open kitchen, an ice cream parlour serving ice cream, churros and coffee, and an upstairs lounge. In true Spanish spirit, they serve both beer and wine from selected producers and you can play both shuffleboard and boules in the leafy lounge, just like on a Spanish summer's day.

Big things are happening at Feskekörka! The new incarnation of the Gothenburg institution consists of two fishmongers and four restaurants. The two fish counters are called Ebbes Fångst and Flåtens Fisk, with the latter offering a range of classic fish from the North Sea and the Barents Sea, as well as caviar and roe. Enjoy a glass of wine, socialise, buy seafood, and visit the restaurants.

No smoke without fire - if you love proper smoky BBQ you'll love Mugwort's. BBQ enthusiasts Johan Kullberg and Sanna Kullberg keep the grills glowing. Until their permanent premises opens you'll find them at their pop-up at Spike Brewery.

The name of this neighbourhood tavern is borrowed from a well-known Gothenburg personality called Kalle Glader, and they aim is to be as popular as their namesake. The atmosphere here is inclusive, with homely interiors and a well-stocked selection of beers. When it comes to food, the focus is on rustic traditional dishes and brunch, all at prices that suit even the slimmest of wallets.

Gothenburg's new event arena Monument 031 spans over 1200 sqm and, as well as two stages, houses several bars, food trucks and eateries. All types of music genres are welcome here, as well as clubs, parties, and other events. 

Bombay Street's second establishment can be found on Ånäsvägen, where they have created a colourful haven inspired by the street food of India's lively metropolises. You'll find all the classic dishes, as well as new favourites, on the menu.

Due Ragazzi means “two guys”, and sure enough, the restaurant is run by two guys with a great passion for food. Simple Italian food takes centre stage here, with dishes such as pasta and pinsa on the menu.

Bōru, which means bowl in Japanese, is a sushi bowl bar that places great emphasis on quality ingredients and simple, delicious flavours. They describe themselves as "fast casual", i.e. fast, well-prepared food made from fresh ingredients, served in a relaxed environment

The aperitivo bar Al Banco has taken over Alora's premises and offers an Italian-style all-day concept that extends from the early hours of the morning until the early evening. Coffee, breakfast, artisanal pasta and local beer are on the food and drinks list.

Suggan wine bar will be an exciting new addition to the Majorna restaurant scene when it opens this year. The emphasis is on wine-friendly Nordic comfort food with international flavours and exciting wines.  

Nou is a restaurant of many different parts, serving, among other things, flavours from Southern Europe and the Caribbean at reasonable prices. There's an area with shuffleboard and open fireplaces, as well as a cookery studio for food-related activities.

Makka revives Sweden's old tradition of beer cafés, in both classic and new ways. Come by for an early morning coffee or grab some food to go and eat lunch on the nearby jetty. Or just come in and enjoy an evening of great food and carefully selected drinks. The menu revolves around one of the world's best-loved dishes, the sandwich, or “makkan” as it's called here. 

Honō has taken over Tokyo 88's premises on Drottninggatan, and carries on the Asian concept. Ramen, sushi, gyoza and other classic Japanese dishes are on the menu, and in the evening it expands with Japanese and Korean BBQ.

Wine Mechanics describe themselves as an urban and modern winery that uses grapes from some of Europe's top vineyards. 48 hours after the grapes are picked, they reach the winery in Gamlestaden where they immediately start crushing, pressing and fermenting the grapes into wine. Enjoy the wines in the bar in Saluhallen indoor food hall, along with paired dishes.

Having run pop-ups with pasta evenings at Folk, Wine Mechanics and Ma Cuisine, in autumn 2023 it was time for Faccia Grassa to get their own permanent address. They describe themselves as "A ravioleria somewhere between idea and reality".

Mr Lac offers guests a colourful experience in terms of both food and environment. Neon lights brighten up the otherwise subdued lighting in the restaurant, where Asian taste experiences are served up for both lunch and dinner. At lunchtime they serve a number of main dishes and for dinner Asian fusion-style sharing plates are the order of the day.

You may well already have tasted Micmatbar's street food at events around town. They now have their own premises on Storgatan where you can enjoy a steady stream of food and drinks, a fun menu and everything from drinks at the bar to slap-up dinners.

Danilo has a new address and a new look. They describe the changes as new and fresh but with the same welcoming atmosphere. Enjoy crispy stone-oven Italian pizza slices or juicy burgers while Frank Sinatra blares from the speakers and wine is poured at the bar. There's also a new basement floor, which goes by the appropriate name Downstairs.

At Käk, they serve expertly-prepared, well-composed dishes that taste as good as they look. The lunch restaurant is located in Sisjön and is open on weekdays, when they serve different seasonal dishes to choose from. They also always have one constant dish on the menu. Lunch includes a salad buffet, coffee and cake.

Culinary craftsmanship is the order of the day at Råda Säteri, a stately 18th century farm in Mölnlycke. Raw ingredients take centre stage when modern cooking techniques are used to conjure up both Nordic and international flavours in a beautiful manor house setting.

Umizu specialises in luxurious and affordable sushi, alongside various Asian and Japanese main dishes. The menu includes everything from traditional nigiri to exciting rolls and poke bowls, as well as tasty hot dishes for all tastes and occasions. There's something here to suit all tastes, whether you need a quick, tasty lunch or you're gathering a group of friends for a relaxed dinner.

Enoteca Maglia have left Italian flavours behind and instead take their inspiration from countries such as Korea, Vietnam, Southern Europe and America - basically anything they think is tasty and want to cook. The whole experience is enjoyed in the form of sharing plates to enjoy in relaxed surroundings. 

There's something here to make all beer lovers happy, as the bar boasts over 150 beers, around 30 of which are on tap. The Gothenburg aspect is important here, so it goes without saying that beers are selected from local craft breweries, and that only Gothenburg artists are played on the speakers. Food is vegan.

Valentinas first opened in Lilla Bommen, and in the autumn it opened the doors to this twice-as-large sister branch in Kallebäck. Come to this French-inspired neighbourhood pub for a glass of wine with some charcuterie, a business lunch or sharing dinner. The menu is regularly updated with different French classics, but always includes a couple of variations on their signature dish, tarte flambée.

“Slice up your life" is the motto here - pizza slices, that is. They serve their specialty pizza in so-called New York-style, in large slices with a thick, crispy outer crust and a thin, foldable middle which makes it easy to eat. Pair your pie with beer on tap and other drinks.  

In the old Hasselblad factory, Objektiv Mat & Bar serves up breakfast and lunch with Swedish flavours. The menu has everything from classics to modern interpretations with an innovative twist, all based on Swedish traditions.

What used to be Le Pain Français on Engelbrektsgatan is now Cosmopolitan, a glittery purple and pink two-floor restaurant that aims to be a destination for international culinary experiences. The menu reflects inspiration from a mixture of countries and cultures, but there's a strong bistro theme and includes salads, pasta, fish and meat dishes.

Brasserie Draken in the Clarion Hotel Draken is a lively restaurant and rooftop bar on the 33rd floor. The later it gets, the livelier, and there's regular live music. Food and drink-wise, perennial classics take priority over passing trends, and everything's given a personal twist.

Clarion Hotel Draken has created a salty seaside bistro with a sweet tooth. Seafood, cakes and pastries and bubbles combine in a lively atmosphere which regularly plays host to live music. 

2 rum bar och kök is run by a family of food-loving restaurateurs, whose aim is to offer a cosy meeting place where you can eat and drink well. Come here for everything from a romantic date or business lunch to an evening with a group of friends or a family dinner.

Beerista has been on Avenyn for a while now and it's now been joined by a sister pub on Friggagatan. Enjoy a wide variety of beers, pub food and a great atmosphere here, all against a backdrop of their distinctive English interiors.

"Spice your life" proclaims Spice on Instagram, promising heat and spice in Gothenburg. They serve South African food such as tasty stews, street food and rice-based dishes with plenty of protein and sauce. Will you choose mild, spicy or extra spicy? As well as Gothenburg, there are also branches of the restaurant in Frankfurt and Barcelona.

Do you love swanning around on the Italian riviera, eating fritto misto for lunch and cooling off with a Pigato under a parasol? Then Chicca Belloni could be the place for you. The concept serves up ambitious yet unpretentious Mediterranean food. 

What used to be called Magasinsgatan 5 was transformed in late summer 2023 into a burger-orientated rock club, with a focus on natural wines and cocktails. American street food is the order of the day at MG5 by 2112, and as well as really great burgers, they serve fried chicken, ribs and other hearty dishes. Expect a cheerful atmosphere marked by a love of music.

Naansense is an Indian restaurant that came about after two foodies bonded over their love of Indian street food, which is exactly what is served here. The menu lists various vegetarian variants of curries, samosas and other colourful street food.

The classic youth hangout, Röda Rummet, has been given a slightly more elegant makeover. In the same premises, Alba will be serving seasonal, modern three-course meals in colourful, inviting surroundings, while Röda Rummet will focus on alcoholic drinks and pastries and will be open from morning until evening. 

We all know how hard it can be to choose between various pizza toppings - a problem the gang at La Pizetta have created a solution to by offering pizzettes; small pizzas in different flavours so you can try several different combinations and flavourings. The toppings on offer vary by season, and the menu also lists classic pizzas and a couple of pasta dishes.

At Potatisen, which is housed in Pinocchio's old premises at Värmlandsgatan 15, the beloved potato takes centre stage, as well as entertainment in various forms. There's a party atmosphere here almost all week, with karaoke, stand-up and live music. The menu consists of different varieties of baked potatoes, at really nice prices.

Poppy on Fjärde Långgatan describe themselves as “a very serious restaurant and wine bar”, serving a tasting menu dinner and a few other dishes.

As you may have guessed from the name, 14 m2 bao inside Saluhallen indoor food market serves bao buns. Taste-wise, culinary influences come from all corners of Asia, but primarily Korea and China. Grab a takeaway or eat on site, preferably with a few loved ones so you can order in several different varieties to share and taste.

Sport meets speakeasy vibes at Grace Sportsbar, on Avenyn. The rustic surroundings combine with sports shown on the big screen, top-notch ingredients and cocktails. They also serve up a trendy gastro bar menu. 

If you want to get out of Gothenburg and head to France you don't even need to book a flight, just head along to Gamlestadstorget. That's where you'll find this slightly anonymous bistro which describes itself as “Un petit bistro et bar à vin de quartier” - a little neighbourhood bistro and wine bar. 

Sushi Lee G, one of Gothenburg's newest additions, can be found on Linnégatan serving both sushi and bowls in an elegant combination. The two chefs behind the restaurant have worked at high-end sushi restaurants in countries such as Korea, Australia, London, Germany and Denmark, before landing in Gothenburg. 

Nittinian serves food from all over the world, such as burgers, Indian food and East African food - to name just a few of the culinary influences on the menu. 

Forget Thai food from food trucks and kiosks - as good as that can often be. Thaibaren has created a modern restaurant with an exceptional graphic profile and a menu consisting of smaller dishes to share with your table, just like in Thailand, giving everyone a taste of spicy, sour, sweet, savoury and bitter. 

“Your hole in the wall in the heart of Lorensberg” - is how Jesper på hörnet describe themselves. Housed in a beautiful turn-of-the-last-century building, Jesper serves up carefully curated wines from selected vineyards, along with cheese and charcuterie platters and medium-size dishes. 

Owners Karl and Linnea Robb Kaardal love food and drink and after several years spent deep diving into the worlds of pizza and wine they felt they were ready to take the next step and open a restaurant. They serve pizza Neapolitan style in the intimate restaurant where you can hang out with the owners and their friends and family. 

Perspolis showcases Persian cuisine, in the form of homemade food that strives for balance, finesse and aroma. Start your meal with a grilled dish and finish with a cup of Persian tea, a homemade dessert or saffron ice cream. 

This rooftop bar at Liseberg calls itself Gothenburg's most colourful rooftop bar. They boast breathtaking views over the amusement park, authentic Chinese flavours and delicious cocktails from the bar. Inspiration comes from the neon-lit backstreets of Hong Kong. 

Rozen takes you on an exciting taste journey to Bulgaria, with authentic home-style dishes such as slow- cooked stews, grilled meats and salads. The restaurant is inside Kville Saluhall, and is run by owner Yanitsa Ivanova, who aims to offer a small taste of Bulgaria in Gothenburg.

Pannhuset at Nääs Fabriker serves artisanal breakfast, fika, lunch and dinner made from top quality locally produced ingredients. During the day you can enjoy cakes and pastries from the konditori, freshly roasted coffee and homemade ice cream, while the evening menu includes dishes grilled over open fire.  

Saluhallen indoor food market has gained a new Italian addition which screams “Don't worry, eat happy”. The menu consists of pizza slices (or rather, rectangles) topped with masses of goodies such as mozzarella, mortadella, pomodoro, salami and nduja.

Plenty of people have tried Hasselsson's excellent fish dishes, but did you know they also serve up sandwiches - big, tasty ones, too. You'll find them in Stora Saluhallen indoor food market. 

As their name suggests, Karibia focuses on Caribbean cuisine. They serve burgers, meat, fish and vegetarian dishes with fresh ingredients such as papaya, coconut, ginger and fresh herbs - along with live music, cocktails and, naturally, an extensive range of rum. 

The Linné neighbourhood has been blessed with an Asian newcomer in the form of Cơm, a Vietnamese restaurant that aims to showcase the breadth of Vietnamese cuisine. The restaurant is decorated with miniature mopeds, lemon trees and rice hat-inspired decorations and the menu is naturally filled with Vietnamese favourites. Expect tasty dishes such as spring rolls, noodles, bánh mì and wontons for meat eaters, vegetarians and vegans alike, at both lunch and dinner. 

If you're looking for Malmö-style falafels, with own-baked bread and crisp vegetables, you don't need to look any further. Spoiler alert: you'll find them at Falafel House. As soon as they opened they became so popular that people often queue to get their hands on a wrap in rush hour. 

Since January 2023 diners have been able to head down to Fjärde Långgatan for an authentic Mexican gastronomic experience. Tizne serves food from the country's various different regions in four-, five- and seven-course menus. Drinks-wise the emphasis is on typical Mexican cocktails and mocktails.

Five years ago, Löfqvist & vi opened their first restaurant, in the Arkaden shopping centre, and in the beginning of January 2023 they opened up a sister restaurant on Västra Hamngatan. They serve lunch and an à la carte menu here, with an emphasis on excellent Swedish homecooking.

Gothenburg now has its first and only Buteco, a gastrobar that has its roots in Latin America. Enjoy colourful food accompanied by innovative cocktails and wines. Jean Henkel, from fine-dining restaurant Carbon, and Michael John hold the reins.
