Italian-American food can move over thanks to Café Britaly

Italian cuisine is consistently ranked as one of the world's favourite types of food. Its stateside cousin, Italian-American food, is also one of the hottest culinary trends of 2024, with new venues opening in London and further afield. That might be about to change though with the launch of an exciting new fusion eatery in Peckham, Café Britaly

Set to open sometime in the spring, this place fuses Italian and British culinary traditions. It's got the British side covered with its location in South London, plus the team behind it (Alex Purdie and Richard Crampton-Platt) are formerly of Bocca di Lupo, so you can be sure they know a thing or two about Italian cuisine as well.

The new venue claims to be “authentically Britalian”, serving classic British dishes updated with Italian ingredients and nostalgic British takes on Italian food – expect the kind of Italian dishes your mum might make (assuming she's British and not Italian). A full menu is yet to be released but diners can expect carbonara with the controversial addition of cream and topped with a fried egg, plus an Italian twist on a full English breakfast that includes fried pizza dough, fennel sausages, and Tuscan-style beans.

Drawing inspiration from Italian-run British cafés, the interiors will give off a retro greasy spoon vibe with mid-century decor, lino floors, and posters from mid-century designers. For comfort food and new takes on a favourite cuisine, this place will be one not to miss. The restaurant is expected to open in Rye Lane in the April or May, and the full menu will become available later in March on Café Britaly's website.
