Where to find Gothenburg's best prawn sandwich

Swedish Taste makes a really classic prawn sandwich, with masses of hand-peeled prawns, creamy egg, lemon and mayo. Pickled red onion and fish roe also make an appearance. As beautiful as they are delicious, they managed to win first place in Thatsup's major prawn sandwich taste test in both 2022 and 2025. They mainly serve their prawn sandwich at weekends but if you're lucky (or with some foresight) you can get one made to order on weekdays. 

Fiskbar 17 isn't just a restaurant – it's a loving tribute to its home port of Gothenburg, and also the winner of Thatsup's big prawn sandwich test 2024. In the 2025 test, Fiskbar 17 secured the honourable second place. Freshly caught prawns are accompanied by good bread, dill, roe, and other accompaniments that belong on a top-notch prawn sandwich. Your only job is to choose between whole or half.

What may just be the most famous prawn sandwich in the country goes by the name of King Size and it's served high above the ground at Heaven 23. As the name suggests, it's on the large side - some 200 grams of hand-peeled Arctic prawns cover this celebrity sandwich. Since they opened in 1984, Heaven 23 has served more than two million prawn sandwiches and their popularity shows no signs of waning. If you really want to treat yourself, top your sandwich with vendace roe.

A well-made prawn sandwich, just a stone's throw from the iconic Poseidon sculpture– it doesn't get much more iconically Gothenburg than that, does it? The menu at Lorensbergs Fisk & Bar may vary depending on the catch of the day, but the classic prawn sandwich always retains its place on the menu. They serve their shrimps on Danish rye bread with fishmonger's mayonnaise, egg & vegetables. Their sandwich bagged third place in Thatsup's 2025 prawn sandwich taste test. 

Prawn sandwiches aren't hard to come by in the picturesque Haga neighbourhood. But if there was a competition for Haga's largest prawn sandwich, Hemma Hos would definitely bag first place. When Thatsup awarded Gothenburg's best prawn sandwich 2024, the restaurant took home the prestigious bronze position. Their prawn sandwiches are substantial and classic, with toppings such as dill mayonnaise, dill oil and lumpfish roe, served in whole or half portions. Why not grab a spot outdoors and enjoy a prawn sandwich as you watch the world go by?

Sjömagasinet has been serving fine fish and shellfish dishes next to the entrance to Gothenburg harbour since the Eighties. Enjoy the atmosphere in the 18th century East India Company boathouse, or admire the view from the jetty. Naturally, the menu includes a luxurious prawn sandwich, which goes under the name Toast Sjömagasinet, topped with a mountain of fresh prawns, bleak roe, langoustines and crab from Bohuslän. 

Inside Gothenburg's indoor food hall, Hedlunds serves up a range of fish and shellfish favourites for both lunch and dinner. One of the classics is of course their prawn sandwich, which is given a slightly unusual twist. It's made with herb mayo, egg yolk cream and crispy quinoa and this new take has proved to be a winning concept.  

Everyone's welcome to this popular spot in the indoor Saluhallen food hall. At weekends, they serve a lunch menu that includes a prawn sandwich with rye bread, MSC-certified prawns, dill mayonnaise, egg, and lemon. 

If you want to enjoy your prawn sandwich in delightfully leafy surroundings, you can aim for Villa Belparc, which is located right next to the Stora Dammen pond in Slottsskogen. Their sandwich is served with hand-peeled prawns, dill mayonnaise, boiled egg, tomato, lemon, and greens. Classic and flavourful.

Cuckoo's Nest walks the fine line between geniality and craziness - hence the name. But their prawn sandwich is sacred, so they make it in a traditional way with hand-peeled prawns, rye or sourdough bread, egg, mayonnaise, cucumber, tomato and lemon. On the menu at both lunch and dinner.

Inside the city's historic Saluhallen indoor food hall, you can enjoy the pride of Gothenburg - the shrimp sandwich - along with a glass of white wine or a cold beer. Kajutan's seafood sandwich is served in classic style with mayonnaise, boiled egg, pickled red onion, lemon, and dill. A real go-to when you crave traditional flavours on sacred ground.

Avalon is famous for having a pool built into the hotel's roof, but also for serving a superior prawn sandwich. The hotel and restaurant on Kungstorget draws in Gothenburgers and tourists alike and lots of people come just for the sandwich, which consists of 160 grams of hand-peeled prawns on homemade malt bread with egg, mayo and lemon.

Gothenburgers have been gathering for delightful dinners at At Park for many years, even if the restaurant has changed name and form a few times over the years. During the warmer months the sunny outdoor dining area quickly fills up with people. Their prawn sandwich is a favourite for many and it's served here with a modern twist - on toasted brioche with mayo, egg, horseradish and lemon.

Cakes take centre stage at popular Mr Cake but the food menu includes a seriously good prawn sandwich. The restaurant calls it "Mr Prawn Sandwich 2.0" and it's made from brioche bread, egg mayo, hand-peeled prawns, tart chili vinaigrette, shaved cucumber and pickled red onion.
