The guide to Gothenburg's Christmas markets

Every Christmas, Liseberg transforms into a sparkling and vibrant winter wonderland. Enjoy a snow-covered winter market filled with the magical spirit of the season. Shop for gifts in the stalls, warming drinks, and thrilling ice skating adventures. You can also experience a vintage Christmas market in the festively decorated Kvarteret Storgatan or take a trip to the Christmas village. Remember to buy your ticket to Liseberg in advance.

At Gunnebo Castle's Christmas market, you'll find Christmas exhibitors selling locally produced delicacies, handicrafts and other items associated with Christmas. Buy Christmas presents, listen to Christmas music and nibble on gingerbread from the bakery. The Christmas market is held over three weekends from mid to late November.

This year, à la London's Christmas design market returns to Auktionsverket Kulturarena on Tredje Långgatan. Over three days, you can shop for fashion, design and interiors from as many as 90 designers.

A short journey south from Gothenburg lies beautiful Tjolöholm Castle. They hold a classic and atmospheric Christmas market, where artisans and food exhibitors from across the country gather to showcase and sell their small-scale products. The castle is adorned with decorations and Christmas lights that create the perfect festive atmosphere, and visitors can also enjoy children's entertainment and meet Father Christmas.

Remfabriken is holding a Christmas market again this year. Over a weekend in November, various artisans will showcase their products among the old factory's machines. Browse among crafts made of textiles, wood, metal, and ceramics, and you would expect from a proper Christmas market, there will be plenty of homemade treats.

Kronhusjul is Gothenburg's oldest Christmas market, which takes place in the city's very oldest building from 1654. Over the Advent weekends, the market features various themes: sustainability, food and treats, as well as design and crafts. The Kronhusbodarna shops are open all week for Christmas gift crafting, snacks, exhibitions, and Christmas adventures.

Just a short distance from Röda Sten Konsthall lies Fixfabriken. You'll also find lush Växtverket here, which is an urban nursery with selected plants and details for home and garden. At Växtverket's Christmas market, you can find everything from beautiful Christmas plants, organic Christmas trees, and handmade wreaths to music, lights, and refreshments.

Vegan-friendly Papi's is organizing an entirely plant-based Christmas market on Kungstorget. Local producers and businesses can showcase both crafts and food products and, as well as shopping they also serve vegan food from several different food trucks.

The archipelago is a particularly special place to be during the festive season. For the 16th year in a row, Hönö Klåva fishing village is arranging advent celebrations. Buy Christmas presents in the many shops and stalls, there are plenty of activities and children can pay a visit to Santa Claus. Gaze out over calm seas and granite rocks and breathe in the festive island atmosphere.

Ängås Gård is originally a farm with roots dating back to the 17th century, which now serves as an organic farm and garden with a café and event spaces. A Christmas market will be held on 29 November with sales of handcrafted goods, Christmas bouquets, and wreaths, as well as pony rides and grilled sausages.

Then check out the Yesbox Christmas market, which takes place at Yesbox Home of Entrepreneurs, where unique products are exhibited and sold that you won't find anywhere else. Yesbox is Gothenburg's initiative for entrepreneurship, innovation, and new business ventures aimed at contributing to sustainable corporate and community development.

Tynnered Church will be hosting a Christmas market with baked goods and hot dogs, sales of homemade products, Christmas sweets, Christmas decorations, flowers, handicrafts, and much more. Bag clothing bargains from the second-hand tables, take part in lotteries with great prizes, and enjoy fun activities for the children. The day begins with a service at 11am, after which the market opens. All proceeds go to ACT Swedish Church and the parish's diaconal reception.

The Christmas market at Nääs Fabriker is a perfect outing if you want to get into the Christmas spirit. The historic factory area is transformed into a winter wonderland with candlelight, trees, handcrafts, gastronomic experiences and activities.

When Kvarnbyn, Mölndal's historic industrial area, celebrates advent, it takes the form of a Christmas market focused on craftsmanship, history and creativity. Over three weekends, the doors to the various businesses are open, inviting the people of Gothenburg to discover studios, museums and shops, as well as participate in workshops and other activities. Each market day offers a unique programme that can be found on the website.

The annual Christmas market at Folkets hus is back with two days of exhibitors and activities. Shop for crochet, crafts, flowers, soaps, lottery tickets, jams, fabric bags, honey and much more, enjoy refreshments at the café run by the ninth graders of Torpaskolan, listen to Christmas music, and take part in a children's lottery.

Göteborgslöjdarna are hosting a small Christmas market in the Botanical Gardens during the first Advent weekend. You can shop for ceramics, wood, felt, knitted items, rag rugs, woodwork, rope crafts, sheepskin crafts, textiles, and honey, as well as meet the crafters behind the works. Edible items such as vegetables, homemade jam, and marmalade will also be available. Additionally, there will be activities such as a workshop in needle felting, readings, and an exhibition.

Lera Med Mera is a social cooperative for individuals who have suffered brain injuries, for example from a stroke. They are now organising a Christmas market featuring handmade ceramics and homemade baked goods. 

Haga Nygata is one of Gothenburg's best preserved and most charming streets, not least when decorated for Christmas. There's a rich selection of tasty treats and all kinds of festive goodies. There will also be musical entertainment and activities at the weekend Christmas markets. The Haga Christmas markets take place every Saturday and Sunday over four advent weekends. 

The Norgården Skogome Development Association promotes farming, food and culture through community and sustainable development at Norgården. The Christmas market is an integral part of this, with the sale of crafts, delicacies, wreaths, bouquets and other fun items from selected producers. The association also serves soup, toast, coffee and glögg in the barn. Norgården is located at Knipplebergsvägen 15 in Skogome, a short walk from bus 42 and the final stop Skogome.

Långängens Scoutkår invites you to their traditional Christmas market on the first of Advent. There will be coffee sales, raffles, sausage grilling, and more.

Timbro publishing invites you to a market and mingling among books and authors. Listen to discussions on this year's big questions and take the opportunity to buy Christmas gifts in book form. The publisher offers glögg and gingerbread cookies along with a hefty dose of intellectual Christmas warmth. Authors Ann Heberlein, Adam Cwejman, Jan Jörnmark, and Orla Vigsø will be participating.

The Christmas market in Nordstan has been a cherished tradition for many years. There's a wide variety of exhibitors selling handicrafts, delicacies, Santa figures, and mulled wine – right in the midst of the festive hustle and bustle, with maximum Christmas spirit.

This year sees the debut of a Christmas market onboard Götheborg, which is docked at Eriksberg. Just like the wooden ship, the Christmas market embraces a 18th-century style with activities for both young and old, both onboard and on the quay. On the cannon deck, visitors can enjoy glögg and festive treats in cosy surroundings, as well as take the opportunity to buy Christmas gifts or something nice for the Advent celebrations.

On 6 December, there will be a fully festive atmosphere in the Gamlestaden former factory area. Restaurants, breweries, shops and exhibitors come together to offer food, festive drinks, and the opportunity to buy everything from arts and crafts to edible gifts.

Take the opportunity to upgrade your kitchen cabinets for Christmas, or find beautiful and unique gifts to give to someone you care about at Anna H ceramics studio in Kålltorp. Buy ceramics directly from the artists themselves, who exhibit and sell handmade ceramics in various shapes and styles.

In the area around the Aftonstjärnan theatre and cinema in Lindholmen, a wide range of creators will be gathering for an art and design market on 6th December. Take the opportunity to find Christmas gifts for loved ones from local artists selling jewellery, lithographs, literature, paintings, candles, ceramics, crochet, canvases, and comics. Aftonstjärnan's café is open and serving mulled wine and gingerbread.

Formverkstan is a day facility for individuals with intellectual disabilities and an interest in art. Here, people can work with craft and design in the form of ceramics, textiles, painting, woodwork, and sculpture, which are then sold at two markets per year, one of which is the Christmas market. Formverkstan is located at 35 Karl Johansgatan.

At Blå Stället's Christmas market, you'll find crafts and designs of various kinds, such as jewellery, knitted and crocheted items. There will also be homebaked treats from near and far, as well as traditional Christmas gifts. If you have toys to donate, please leave them at reception so they can be given out to the children at Blå Stället's Christmas party on the 14th of December.

Högsbo Hobby Association consists of members who have created items to be raffled and sold at favourable prices. Browse through hand-poured candles, baked goods, bread, woodcraft, woven and knitted items, stop by for a coffee, participate in the raffle, and shop for Christmas gifts.

On 6th December, Majornakyrkan church will host a Christmas market. You can buy homemade and handmade goods, purchase experiences, enjoy a soup lunch, festive treats and Christmas sweets, check out the thrift shop, and participate in the tombola.

At Stora Holms Säteri, they've been looking forward to the Christmas market all year, and the weekend of the second Advent it's finally happening. The market is a well-established tradition that has been held at the estate for over 45 years, offering a wide range of food and treats, crafts, art, and of course, plenty of Christmas magic.

Brännö island hosts their annual Christmas walk accompanied by a Christmas market. Hop on the ferry from Saltholmen that will take you to Brännö Rödsten, where this year's Christmas walk awaits. The cabins on the island are open and filled with decorations, art, ceramics, jewellery, and knitted goods for sale, and there's also mulled wine, baked goods, and other delicacies – everything Christmassy, in other words.

At Ladan farm in Backa, the festive spirit will be in full swing on the second Sunday of Advent. The place will be filled with a Christmas atmosphere, sausages in buns, a café, Christmas tree sales, plenty of crafts, and a visit from Santa.

On Sunday, 7th December, it's time for Tolsered's 4H farm's annual Christmas market featuring crafts, refreshments, flatbread sales, kids' games, pony rides, and raffles.

The ceramics workshop Huset för Kruset opens its doors for a Christmas market and sells ceramics in abundance. You can also enjoy Christmas crafts in clay and indulge in festive treats.

Saluhallen has become a popular meeting place on Gothenburg's favourite island, Hisingen. The annual Christmas market, Kvillejul, is a joyful tradition and attracts many who want to buy gifts or just indulge in good food. This year, the Christmas market is celebrating its tenth anniversary. Local traders, as well as exhibitors from far and wide, are present, with everything from furniture decorations and leather jewellery to delicious cheeses and locally grown Christmas trees sharing space in the festively decorated food hall.

Kulturella Skeppet GBG debuts this year with a Christmas market where the Salon is filled with art, crafts, design, accessories and vinyls - all with views of the waters of the Göta River. They go all-in on the super-cosy Christmas vibes.

The Gathenhielm House is a beautiful building built in the 1740s in Majorna, which transforms into a magical Christmas world on 13th December. The historic house and the idyllic courtyard become a Christmas paradise filled with the scent of mulled wine, roaring fires, and shimmering lights. You'll find fire pits to warm chilly hands, crafts, art, vintage items, and Christmas gifts alongside treats and delicacies that taste just like the Christmases of childhood.

ICA Åkeredshallen in Västra Frölunda invites you to a Christmas market with its suppliers who will offer tastings, share tips and inspiration, and help you find new favourites for the festive season. There will also be local producers present with personal, handmade Christmas gifts and decorations. ICA will provide warm mulled wine and gingerbread biscuits.

On 20 December, there will be a Christmas market for all collectors at Ringögatan 13. You can find bargains among Pokémon and collectible cards, video games, vinyl, CDs, VHS, toys, comic books, 70s, 80s, and 90s design, vintage clothing, watches, jewellery, and much more.

For the third year in a row, Medialportalen is opening its doors to its alternative Christmas market. Here, the focus is on the sale of objects with a spiritual connection, as well as services such as palm reading, tarot guidance, and contact with spirits, among others. The doors open at 5pm and close when the elves go to bed.
