The city's biggest playground
Right in the middle of Gothenburg's equivalent of Central Park, Slottskogen, is Plikta playground. This incredibly popular meeting place for young families got a huge facelift in 2012, when swings, climbing frames and slides were all completely renovated. The playground is also accessible for children with impaired mobility. Next to the park there are public-use grills that are lit daily. The easiest way to get to the park is from Linnéplatsen.

This is a great activity for playful adults or families with slightly older children. The mini-golf course in Slottskogen, by Linnéplatsen, offers an action-packed game in leafy park surroundings. Stroke mini pigs and other cute animals
Slottskogen has many delights, for both large and small visitors. At the top of a hilly walk you'll find Barnens Zoo. The kids can stroke Swedish heritage breeds, such as goats and pot-bellied pigs. Discover the joy of standing on a stool and watching as chicks hatch under heat lamps. Or visit the rabbits and their babies. There's also pony riding next to Barnens Zoo.

Hang out with Alfons in the heart of town
At one entrance to the Trädgårdsföreningen, the Garden Society of Gothenburg, a short walk from the central railway station, is the park's old seed store. This listed building now houses a creative cultural centre for children featuring the much-loved Swedish fictional character Alfons Åberg, or Alfie Atkins as he's called in English. The whole family can come here to discover and play. Alfie and his friends provide daily activities such as film viewings and various kinds of experiments. Meet granny, Millan and Mållgan and take a look inside the apartment building where Alfie lives. Everyone's welcome here and the house is adapted for children with special needs.

5000 square metres of fun
This vast indoor play palace has everything you could wish for under the same roof. Quirky sightseeing tours
See the city in a new and different way with Ocean Bus, which is exactly what it sounds like – a bus that can drive on both land and in water. The tour starts at Stora Teatern and at Älvsborg Bridge it heads into the water to the great delight of the passengers. See famous landmarks such as the statue of Poseidon and Avenyn before the bus leaves you safely and securely back at the theatre.

Head out to sea and feast on prawns
If you want to experience Gothenburg from its saltiest side you should hop aboard one of the old archipelago boats and head out among the islands. Start the evening with a drink before it's time to take a seat in the pleasant dining room. For three hours you can enjoy a generous salmon and shellfish buffet, as the view outside changes throughout the evening. The shellfish cruise departs several times a week and onboard the M/S St Erik musical entertainment is part of the package. The ship, which was built in 1881, also offers brunch and Christmas buffet cruises and can hired for private events such as weddings.

Chug around Gothenburg's most charming streets
Climb aboard Stinsen's little red train on Gustav Adolf Torg and begin your journey through Gothenburg's loveliest parts. The train driver stops at a number of spots along the way and if you've bought a day ticket you can hop on and off as much as you like. The tour takes you to Gothenburg's oldest quarter, Haga, a lively area full of independent restaurants and cosy restaurants. It also stops at Feskekörka, Kronhusbodarna and Gothenburg Opera House. The trip takes 40 minutes, if you choose to stay put from start to fiinish. Should it start raining (as it's wont to do in Gothenburg) the train is equipped with a rain cover.

City Escape Games

Explore the island that held off the Danes
Strömma Skärgårdsbåtar allows you to discover Gothenburg from the water. Take the boat from Lilla Bommen, by Nordstan, and after a 30 minute journey you'll get off at the historic fortress, Nya Älvsborgs Fästning. The trip includes a guided and dramatised tour of the fortress, from where Danes where held off from attacking the city in the 18th century. The fortress has played an important part in the city's history since the 1500s and in addition to historic vibes, you can also enjoy the wave-washed rocks in surroundings that have earned it a place in the Michelin Green Guide.

Join Eventligan on an spooky journey through time and space, where you get to meet Gothenburg's cruelest executioner, kings and other historical characters who lived in the city from the 17th century onwards. Parks and green areas
A trip to paradise
Gothenburg has several beautiful green areas and parks, and Trädgårdsföreningen, the Garden Society of Gothenburg, is one of the most popular. The park's many winding gravel paths make for romantic strolls. At the far end of the park you'll find the impressive Palmhuset, built in 1887. Inside this 1000 square metre greenhouse you can wander between several different tropical zones and the palatial building is a popular spot among art students. The park also includes a restaurant, café, shop and Alfons Åberg's Kulturhus.

Stroll through celebrated gardens and discover new plant species
Gothenburg's Botanical Garden boasts more than 16 000 plant species and cultivars and the entire park is 175 hectares. The park, which is one of Europe's largest botanical gardens, clearly demonstrates the wonder and diversity of nature. In addition to all the exciting plants outdoors, there's also a plant and butterfly house. The park arranges regular events from mushroom courses in the autumn to apple tastings and various courses. There's a shop next to the main entrance and a café further inside the park.

Echoes of the past in authentic 18th century surroundings
This well-maintained castle is situated a short distance south of Gothenburg in Mölndal. The castle, with its surrounding parks, herb gardens and orangery, is a perfect outing for stressed-out city dwellers and tourists in need of a change of pace. Admission cards and passes
How to get around Gothenburg.
Everything on one card
This pass gives you admission to everything from museums to gardens, sightseeing tours and events. The perfect option if you want to 'do' the whole city. You can charge the card for 1-5 days' use and it even opens the doors to Liseberg, Universeum and public transport. Buy the pass at Gothenburg Tourist Office, or download it straight onto your phone.
Tram, bus and boat
Choose a card that gives you free access to all the city's public transport. You can buy cards valid for one or three 24 hr periods. The card allows you to take along four other travellers, completely free, as long as it's valid. Otherwise, you can always buy single tickets onboard most methods of transport, from the blue ticket machines. Pay by cash or credit card. You can also pay for public transport on the Västrafik app.
