Taverna Averna is a large-format bistro that was opened by the Avenyfamiljen restaurant group (now Göteborgsfamiljen) in autumn 2014. The restaurant serves organic classics with a modern twist. The bar serves house cocktails, wines, digestifs and other drinks. The minimalist interior creates a homely feel, complete with wooden floors, wooden furniture and lots of artwork.
The grand locale was previously home to Göteborgs Auktionsverk auction house, and the rooms are largely characterised by the 350 unique paintings, photographs and prints that adorn the bistro's walls. Groups of friends and families alike gather here over a convivial dinner.
Inside the grand entrance in glass and brass, you're welcomed by the maître d' from behind a charming pulpet and shown to one of the restaurant's many tables. Sit high up on café chairs or choose one of the elongated sofas in dark brown leather. There are numerous spots to choose from.
The restaurant's concept is based mainly around international bistro-style dishes, and the menu includes classics such as toast Skagen, steak tartare and steak frites. The menu changes regularly, but also includes permanent favourites such as thin-crust pizzas and the house pasta vongole.
The many works of art contrast with the airy furnishings characterised by wooden chairs, patterned floor tiles and cobbler's lamps. Cocktails are shaken and stirred and bubbly is served at the stylish marble bar. The bar area also regularly hosts Friday happy hours, which are accompanied by DJs.

We were seated at a table with a view of the entire restaurant. This doesn't happen often, but everything on the menu appealed to me. In the end we shared a starter that was 10/10, and for the main course I had a classic Biff Rydberg. Both dishes were very good!
I loved the food here, but what really deserves an extra mention is the staff and the atmosphere. Every single person who worked here was nice to the tips of their fingers and made our lunch extra fun.
