On Monday 5 February, the prestigious Michelin Guide revealed the new recipients of its sought-after stars in Great Britain and Ireland, and London came away with quite the haul.

A Michelin star is arguably the highest culinary honour a restaurant can receive, and there's always great anticipation in the lead-up to the ceremonial reveal. Chefs nervously await a life-changing decision that represents affirmation of all their hard work, diners keep their fingers crossed as they wait to see if their local favourite is finally getting the recognition they think it deserves, and previously starred restaurateurs nervously polish forks as they await news of whether they've retained their stars and perhaps even snagged another one. In short, the Michelin Guide awards are a Big Deal™.

At an awards ceremony held in Manchester on Monday 5 February, the 2024 crop of new stars was sprinkled across the dining scenes of Great Britain and Ireland, and compared to last year's relatively meagre haul, London did very well for itself. No fewer than eleven London restaurants received their first Michelin star, one shot straight from zero to two stars, and several others received an additional star. Here are all of this year's newly anointed Michelin star recipients in London:

Somewhat surprisingly, Manchester was completely overlooked this time around. With the Michelin Guide Great Britain & Ireland ceremony held at the northern city's famed Midland Hotel, many had interpreted this as a favourable sign for that city's hospitality sector and indication that Manchester's sole Michelin-starred restaurant Mana was about to get some new companions, but no such luck. Several other towns did get recognised, however, including Birmingham.

In addition to the main awards, London's Restaurant St. Barts was one of six new establishments to receive a Green Star for their sustainable practices, while Michel Roux Jr of the recently shuttered Le Gavroche received the Michelin Chef Mentor Award.
