A new survey has ranked major cities around the world according to the number of museums, theatres, concerts, galleries, and other cultural venues and attractions they feature.
The analysis took in data on 40 major cities worldwide, from Melbourne and Cape Town to Samarkand and Santa Fe, including our very own London. Culture fiends in the Big Smoke will be happy to learn that London has come in at a high second place with a score of 8.34 out of a possible ten. It was only pipped to the post by Paris, which, well, it's hard to argue with. Paris had a total score of 8.52 to take the crown of the world's most inspiring cultural city, in large part due to the staggering number of accessible public pieces of art – 3,729, more than twice the number in London.
Berlin came in a close third on the rankings, with a score of 8.04, while Italy surprisingly put up a very poor showing. Of the four cities it fielded, only Rome cracked the top 20, coming in 19th with a score of 5.53, while Milan, Florence, and Venice landed deep in the bottom half. They're joined by Edinburgh, the only other UK city on the list, with a score of 4.85.
