5 Unusual, Memorable London Activities

When you’re tired of London, you are tired of life. Samuel Johnson coined that phrase back in 1777, yet it remains just as true today. Even if you’ve visited the UK capital dozens of times — or even lived there for years — there will, we promise you, still be dozens of fantastic things that you’ve yet done.

After all, London is one big old city, and it’s also continually evolving and changing. If you’re continually drawn to the new, then there’ll be historic sites you’ve missed out on. If you’re drawn to the old, then you’ll likely have missed out on some of the groundbreaking attractions and experiences London has to offer.

With that thought in mind, we thought it’d be a good idea to put together a list of some of the often overlooked attractions that you’ll find in the UK capital. If you’re looking for something different to do, then try one of these ideas.

Discover the Underground

When we say, ‘discover the underground,’ we don’t mean ‘take public transport.’ You’ll do that enough, and while it’s an awesomely efficient system, it’ll unlikely to be the highlight of your trip.

But taking a London Underground Tour? That will be a highlight. As you might imagine, London’s underground network is filled with fascinating infrastructure and stories. There are a bunch of different tours to take, including of the now-closed Aldwych station and Baker Street, which was the world’s first underground station.

Visit London’s Classiest Casino

Love playing poker, blackjack, or roulette? Then a trip to Crown London, by far the classiest casino in the city, should be on the cards. This is a private gaming club, so you’ll need to become a member before making your trip.

And as you might expect, games here tend to be slightly more formal than in other casinos, so it’s essential that players are ready for action when they arrive; re-reading the rules of their preferred game or practicing at an online casino can ensure that visitors get the most from their trip. Once you’ve finished playing, round off your evening with a world-class meal in the casino’s stunning onsite restaurant.

Explore God’s Own Junkyard

God’s Own Junkyard, a neon-lights museum based in Walthamstow, is a cult favourite in London. There’s not much we can say that’ll prepare you for a trip to this small but impactful museum. There’s not a lot by way of science and other staples of museum institutions in this place, but we’re sure you won’t be disappointed. It’s like going to see the lights and signs of Las Vegas, only if they were all stored in one compact warehouse at the end of the Victoria Line.

Buy an Umbrella

Buying an umbrella might not sound like the most exciting thing in the world, but we’re not talking about any old umbrella. We’re talking about an umbrella from James Smith & Sons, a London business that has been making world-class umbrellas since 1830. And of course, your purchase will be more than just a nice souvenir of your trip. Given London’s weather, we think you’ll probably get fair use from the umbrella during your trip. We’d recommend buying it on your first day in the capital.

Dinner in the Dark

Dinner at Dans le Noir isn’t just delicious; it’s also a pretty mind-bending experience. You’ve probably never eaten dinner in the dark before (not by design, anyway), but that’s just what you’ll do at this trendy restaurant in Clerkenwell. The experience is so cool that you probably wouldn’t mind if the food wasn’t up to scratch, but happily, it is — in fact, it’s outstandingly delicious. Enjoy!
