There’s great news for the capital’s vegan diners, plus those who like the odd foray into plant-based cuisine – London has been named as the most vegan-friendly city in the whole world. Influential online vegan and vegetarian directory HappyCow has released its 2022 list of the top 10 most vegan-friendly destinations worldwide, with London taking the top spot and surpassing cities such as Berlin, Amsterdam, and Barcelona.
HappyCow rated London so highly thanks to its massive number of purely vegan establishments – not limited just to restaurants - with over 400 in total. This year the city also became the first in HappyCow’s history to have over 200 vegan restaurants listed in their directory.
HappyCow reached its conclusion by considering a number of factors about the city’s food scene. Cities were ranked according to the number of completely vegan eateries within 10km of the city centre, the number of fully vegan businesses in the city, the number of fully vegan, vegetarian, and veggie-friendly restaurants, the density of vegan businesses per capita, the growth of vegan businesses since last year’s rankings, and a qualitative assessment from the HappyCow community.
Anyone familiar with vegan cuisine in the capital is unlikely to be surprised by these results. With 1.16% of the UK population allegedly following a vegan diet there’s certainly demand. London’s plant-based eaters have plenty of choice, from vegan chicken shops, pizza spots, and health food destinations, to exclusive French fine dining. There’s no doubt that London has options for every type of plant-based eater.
