The Japanese omakase trend – leaving things up to the chef – is thriving in London, and if you’re a fan then a new luxury restaurant in Mayfair is likely to excite you. Taku in Albemarle Street is the first London venture from renowned Japanese chef Takuya Watanabe. Most recently, Watanabe was chef-patron at Jin Paris, the first sushi omakase restaurant in Paris to earn a Michelin star, which it has held for the past decade.
Taku promises diners an intimate experience and unadulterated luxury. Lunch is the lighter option, with 17 courses on the menu, and for dinner it’s a 20 course meal. Choose the signature menu or the higher-priced prestige option, which includes additional courses and luxurious ingredients. With only 16 seats and three sittings per day, diners are promised a highly exclusive meal.
Menus are naturally subject to change but you can expect fresh British produce and plenty of sushi. Watanabe has cited the quality of British fresh fish and crustaceans as a key reason for opening a London restaurant. Food is paired with a selection of carefully-chosen fine wines, champagne, and speciality sake. The compact nature of this stylish spot might mean getting a booking is tough but if you’re looking for a meal in London that gives you a memorable experience, Taku could be just the place.
