The Deptford branch of Manze's to close in 2025

There's sad news for Londoners who love traditional grub – the Deptford branch of pie and mash institution Manze's has announced that it is set to close after more than 100 years of service. Originally operated by Michele 'Michael' Manze, who emigrated to London from Italy in the late 1800s, the eatery is now run by his grandson, George Maskell. George has been running the business for 40 years but the shop is going to close when he retires.

The good news is that pie and mash fans still have lots of time to enjoy their favourite meal at Manze's. Although George's retirement is imminent, it's not happening until March 2025, leaving you with over a year to get down there and say goodbye. When the shop closes it will have been 45 years since George took over and 111 years since it was first opened by the real-life M Manze. It's expected that the other Manze's branches around the city will continue to operate.

This place really is a piece of tradition. As well as classic London food, the Grade II-listed space boasts traditional wall tiles, wooden benches, and marble tables, all of which are original features. It's well worth soaking up this piece of London's history before it disappears forever.
