Pizza has a very special place in our hearts and in recent years the perenially popular dish has managed to find its way onto menus beyond the purely Italian. This guide gathers together both pizzerias and other restaurants in Gothenburg that serve pizza as part of their menu. Pizzas these days are so much more than Calzone and Hawaii, so follow our guide for the low-down on Gothenburg's best pizzas, from thin and crispy creations to large, generously-topped pizzas big enough to share.

Pizza with park vibes
At Walk in the Park in Linné they specialise in Roman-style pizzas. Choose whether you want a small, medium or large pizza and whether to accompany it with a glass of natural wine, a locally-brewed beer or perhaps an organic cocktail. The restaurant's leafy park-like surroundings, with trees and lanterns inside, add to the Mediterranean atmosphere.

Creative pizzas in colourful surroundings
As the name suggests, Bov Discobar invites you to an evening of bright colours, pop music, fabulous cocktails - and pizza! Culinary inspiration comes from the thin and crispy pizzas they serve in Rome, and, in addition to the menu's regular toppings, new, experimental pizzas pop up every now and then. The food is best combined with a glass of natural wine from one of the many colourful bottles in the disco bar's wine room.

Small and intimate
Robb is run by the couple Karl and Linnea Robb Kaardal, who serve up Neapolitan pizzas and hand-selected wines with a passion for Italian food and drinks culture. The menu includes a couple of carefully selected traditional style pizzas, as well as a regularly-changing guest pizza and as a couple of small dishes and dessert. Pizzas are only served on site on Mariagatan.

All five senses
Restaurang V aims to stimulate all of their guests' five senses - hence the name, in which the V stands for the Roman numeral for five. They serve innovative Genovese pizzas with both classic toppings and more modern ones, and there are always options for meat-eaters, vegetarians and people who don't eat pizza. A modern Italian, quite simply.

Pizza in French
Try out another kind of pizza, with French influences. Valentinas have made a name for themselves with their tartes flambées with various flavours and toppings. Gruyère cheese is a perennial favourite, as well as truffles, mushrooms, beetroot and walnuts. The tartes are served at lunch (a daily special) and at dinner and can be enjoyed alongside one of their European wines.

Gourmet pizza, Neapolitan style
BOV stands for two of the most important things you need to make pizza: bread and wood ("bröd och ved" in Swedish). Simplicity and taste are the watchwords at this restaurant between Vasa and Johanneberg. Their Neapolitan pizzas are made with sourdough bases and delicious toppings and just as in Naples, great-quality ingredients take pride of place here. The bar serves cocktails, beer and selected wines; on sunny days the little alfresco dining area fills up quickly.

By the Chef of the Year
Grano is run by Thomas Sjögren, who won Chef of the Year at just 23 years old , and who has also won the Chefs' Battle. His restaurant in Granö serves a pizza-focused menu, along with a bunch of small dishes with flavours from around the world. Dishes, as well as the toppings on the pizzas, vary according to the season, but the signature pizza with pancetta, comté and lemon has a regular spot on the menu all year round.

Unusual pizzas and fun drinks
Oizo can be found in Kålltorp, a little way outside Gothenburg's city centre - well worth the trip if you're in the mood for artisanal pizza combined with locally produced beer and natural wine. The menu includes both regular favourites and guest appearances, often with some unexpected elements. The floor and walls are tiled in white which, together with simple wooden furniture, creates a charming, pared-back environment. Drop-in is the order of the day, so we recommend getting there in good time if you want to avoid standing in line.

Wood-fired pizzas with locally-produced toppings
Totale call themselves a "charmingly wonky neighbourhood restaurant" and an unpretentious warmth characterises both the menu and the atmosphere. Pizzas have their own menu and, just like everything at Totale, they're made from Scandinavian ingredients from local producers. The menu includes several white pizzas, with toppings such as smoked pork belly and bleak roe. Drinks-wise, natural wines are Totale's specialty.

Uncomplicated
This relaxed neighbourhood restaurant keeps things no-frills and fuss-free, simply serving what the chefs themselves like. Dough in focus
Deg means dough in Swedish and, as the name suggests, dough plays a starring role here. Their modest ambition is to create the perfect pizza, and to achieve this goal they experiment with different ingredients to create exciting new combinations and flavours. Fun cocktails, wine and beer are served alongside the pizza. The premises have a charming 70s-style vibe - inspired by the decade pizza first came to Sweden.

Gothenburg's pizza palace
Moreno is the Italian word for "dark", and refers to the fact that the pizzas here are baked a little longer in a smoky, extra-hot wood oven, to get a really crispy base and flavours that are highlighted by the smokiness. Moreno is housed in a former cinema building, and with no less than 1,560 seats, it's said to be the world's largest pizzeria.
