House of Photography

Visual creativity in focus 

In the historic Tvålpalatset on Sankt Paulsgatan at Mariatorget, House of Photography is an art gallery and a creative, artistic meeting place with a focus on photography in central Stockholm. The gallery is run by brothers Per and Jan Broman, who founded Fotografiska.

Art by both established photographers and rising stars from all over the world is shown here. Their aim is to function as a living space rather than a traditional institution; a place where you stop, take in and discuss what you've just seen.

The art gallery contains three rooms with different characters. The grand Tvålsalen shows top international photographers with strong visual expressions and artistic pondus. The slightly smaller Mörkrummet gives space to a new generation of photographers who are pushing the design language forward. They also show an ongoing exhibition, Icons of Photography, where 100 of the most influential works in the history of photography are presented, one at a time. The exhibitions change every two to three months and rotate, which means that there's always something new to discover. The selection is based on both solid knowledge and gut feeling, with a focus on what's visually interesting and relevant right now.

As well as the exhibitions, there's also a small shop and a bar. With generous opening hours and an easily accessible location next to Mariatorget, House of Photography aims to become an obvious destination in Södermalm, perfect for a stop-off on a Saturday stroll or for anyone interested in photography – or for a date.
